I have sent Kim an email and I will send one to anyone else who has a go. I won't give the answer on the forum until the whole solution is presented.

The only Maths Genius, whom I have known, was Ivor Cohen (Ba B 1940-1946) who could run his fingers up a column of four figures, and write the answer at the bottom.( At the age of 11 !) I believe he spent his last Term at CH teaching the 3rd Form -- (On the basis that the School couldn't teach him anything more about Maths -- and just suggested "Readings")

When I last met him, he had his own firm of Chartered Accountants !
I remain in Awe !

I can't tell whether it is 0 or 1 - there isn't enough information in the examples. But infinity would be 2.

I can't think of a solid enough solution, but everything I have tried comes back to 7....

MKM is right and for the right reason.

She IS a maths whiz but actually you don't have to be for this.

I think I have it figured out.

If I'm right, it's not really a maths problem as such.

Like MKM, I can't decide between 0 and 1 as the answer, though.

Missed this earlier, but I agree with you Matthew, definitely not Maths, but fun all the same! Also agree with Mary's answers.

On a similar theme I was once at a Maths Competition in Sarawak, which was held in Malay. The question was what letter is next in the sequence O,T,T,F,F,S ? Big hint - they had taken the question from an English medium set of questions it did not work in Malay!

OK, I was just waiting for Katharine.

It is the number of enclosed spaces in each series.

the 0 or 1 answer is because of the 4. Obviously when you write it there is no enclosed space, but when the type it you get thye triangle.

The answer to Katharine's question is S by the way.

Sorry to have kept you waiting Mary! My mind has been more on Mother than other things recently, last night she told me not to waste any more of my money phoning her so she IS back to normal!

Yes the answer to mine is S, that one really does show it wasn't a Maths question as it doesn't work in other languages..
