School Carmen and other songs....
I have remembered a bit better this time than last time I wrote ( plus I can't find the page I wrote the start of the carmen on.... (hey this is good - it looks pretty foreign!! Almost Latin like!!!!)
Unem concentum toiletea
Lito sodalis sono
et vote Christo Fundatae
Nostri domus patrono
Nostro Farveti carmeni
ammicae qua qua estis
qua qura tanget hospiti
qirulia i qui vestis
Ut per piora siculum
sic tempus in fectorrum
et literarum Gloria
et ipsum ajectorum
Ne noceat concordiae
????
Please add more and put me out of my misery!!!!

I know the tune - it was so depressing that it lingers in the back of my mind like Eeyore!!englishangel wrote:OMG
I can't even remember the tune, but I will let you know if/when it comes back to me.
I bet one of the men knows it, I will ask.
The 7th verse was written especialy for the school and is sung to the 2nd half of the tune - each 2 verses is made up of 2 separate tunes.... which mournfully go together!

Try this :
Votum
Unum concentum tollite
Læto, sodales, sono;
Et vota Christo fundite
Nostræ domus Patrono.
Nostro favete carmini,
Amici, quotquot estis.
Quos cura tangit Hospiti
Cæruleæque vestis.
Ut per priora sæcula,
Sic tempus in futurum,
Det fausta Deus omnia
Et Ipsum adjuturum.
Ne noceat concordiæ
Contentio proterva,
Neu tabes obsit corpori
Neu febrium caterva.
Mores honesti suppetant
Et utilis doctrina
Et litterarum gloria
Et recta disciplina.
Ludi viriles floreant,
Qui præbeant salutem
Fraterna per certamina
Et nutriant virtutem.
Artes colantur gymnicae,
Per gratum quæ laborem
Et robur addunt corpori
Et robori decorem.
Sit in dies felicior
Vigore domus verno,
Et floreat, ut floruit,
Honore sempiterno.
I was never too sure how some of the words could be sung by the girls.
"Ludi viriles floreant"? May manly games flourish...
"Cæruleæque vestis"? Not at Hertford....
Wouldn't describe the tune as 'mournful', though.

Ok RR - you win you even got the Latin correct - I don't know why we sung so many verses of it - but have a silver button for knowing (sadly)all the verses- bet you copied them though!!!Richard Ruck wrote:Try this :

perhaps we could get the music and have a web site to play it from - I might have a go at that - just remember though, the only words that fit in with the tune and latin if you can't remember them is Rhubarb and Custard...... !!!Richard Ruck wrote:Guilty as charged!Jude wrote:.....bet you copied them though!!!

we only had 7 verses - we didn't have
Ludi viriles floreant,
Qui præbeant salutem
Fraterna per certamina
Et nutriant virtutem.
hence the weird tuning for the last verse, and you had the extra verse to make it more MANLY!!!
OK RR let's have a proper translation into English so we can actually read what the hell we were singing about? And this time - no cheating - I too can surf the web and find out what it means - and go to the History of CH etc..... This should keep you amusized for an arn or 2....

you work???? How do you find the time to play in here? I seem to have lost my life since I found this website!!!! My daughter keeps asking why I am laughing - as she never went to CH she doesn't completely understand.... but then neither do I really!!!Richard Ruck wrote:Hmmmm, a challenge, eh?
OK, I'll see what I can do.
Might take a couple of days to do it properly, though. Believe it or not, I do actually do some work from time to time!
