Right I have before me the Sir Barnes Wallis Memorial Booklet...

"Then shall all stand to sing the Foundation Hymn of Christ's Hospital"

Praise the Lord for our Foundation,
praise him for out Holy Name,
Christ out Host and our Salvation,
Yesterday, to-day, the same.
In his tender love he sought us
When we needed most his aid,
By the hand of man he brought us
To the home his love had made.

Prasie him for Religous guiding,
For the Royal Founder King,
For the Ancient house providing
Shelter 'neath her kindly wing.
Prosper, Lord, with heavenly blessing,
Lives of those who love her peace;
With thy love their hearts possessing,
Make there number to increase.

Brothers, best with righteous living
Shall our grateful thanks be paid,
Lifting up with hearts forgiving
Holy prayer in duty made;
Praise we this the God of HEaven,
Christ our Saviour and our Host,
With the Lord of Spirits seven,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Words : the Venreable A.W. Upcott, DD Heamaster of CH (!902-19)
Music: R. Wilkinson, Director of Music, Christ's Hospital (1902-29)

my fingers ache now - so am off to bed!

Mrs C - which line is going to change? the "Make their number to increase?"

ah perhaps we girls only ever had this version. Another song that is different at both schools - this is interesting...
We girls had Carmen - Boys had Votum
We were a verse short - boys had whole
Foundation Hymn from 1980 only has 3 verses in the Memorial service, and I don't remember a 4th...

The 3rd verse is about the 'spacious dwelling' 'ringed with downs and woodlands fair'

I can't remember the exact words.

The Foundation hymn was written by the headmaster of the boy's school and its director of music shortly after the boys moved to Horsham - I guess the 3rd verse wasn't as relavent to Hertford...

When we sang this at All Saints, Hertford in 2000, the line which gave concern was Brothers, best with righteous living As I recall Judith Lillie, past Head Girl and one of the officiating clerics said there had been debate amongst themselves over that first word. If we wanted, on that occasion, we could sing Sisters, but by the time we got to that line most had forgotten and sang brothers!

RR I know that you will never manage to produce a translated via latin dictionary translation - and I have already posted it in here as you were too busy shinning your buttons to copy the transliteraton from wherever you copied the Latin from in the 1st place - you should have at least 2 de-merits for that... and go back down the grecian for a whole week!

I've shortened it a teeny bit for you!
B*gger.

And Jude, I think Votum and Carmen are two different things, they certainly have different tunes.
