The structure of the CHA

Ask questions of the CHOBA board. This is a new idea, which depending on demand we'll review it's continuance moving forward.

The structure of the CHA

Post by Great Plum »

Hi,

Is the current structure of the CHA, with the Board, chairman and replacement of board members every 3 years set in stone?

Is this similar to how the Club was run?

Does each board member have an area they specialise in?

Thanks for the question (our first - excellent!)

I'm not an expert in the structure/terms of the board, and hence will forward this on to those on the board that are.

Target response date (latest):- 19th July 2006

The CHA Board and CH Club Management Committees are very different.

The role of the CHA and the constitution of the Board was set out in the Consultation Paper which went out to Club members (?)2 or even 3 years ago and is largely unchanged.

The Board looks to recruit members by identifying the skills needed - see the article in the Old Blue in December for the skills identified for the recruitment campaign for the Board early this year, to replace those who left at the end of the first year. Different years will look for people with different skills.

And the way Steve Webb has now organised the Board, yes, individuals have been given 'areas of responsibility' on which to focus - and we are kept on task by regular monthly telephone conferences supplemented by four or five actual meetings a year (some in Horsham, some in London). This, again, is quite different from the way the CH Club was run.

Does that answer Matthew's question......? If not then probably Carol or Steve would be better placed to answer.

For general information, this is the current list of CHA Management and Advisory Board, as presented at yesterday's Court of Governors meeting.

In the case of Advisory Board members, the areas in which we are each primarily involved appear next to our names although, of course, we would all have some involvement in a wide range of issues and activities.

The CHA Advisory Board

Chairman: Steve Webb
Almoner: Carol Stevens
School: Adrian Bawtree

Kate Atkinson (Young Old Blues)
David Eastburn (Sections)
Norman Grimes (Careers)
John Hopgood (The Old Blue)
Richard Ruck (Events/Careers)
Kerren Simmons (Events)
Julian Taylor (Website)

The CHA Management Team

Sam Rider - Development Director
Zoe Mitchell - CHA Manager
Wendy Killner - CHA Administrator

I hope that helps.

Okay for someone who has been out in the wilderness for sometime now and only just returned. When I left there was only the Old Blues club and the CH Old Girls Association (CHOGA). DBTS told me in conversation that the OB Club folded. Why did this happen?
How did the CHA come into being and how are the board members elected. Well basically a potted history of everything

Hello Scone Lover. Can I join you on your planet....? Here's a potted history :-
a) re CHOGA. We did not recruit new members after the Merger, in 1985. In about 1997 CHOGA ceased to exist as a separate legal body. We 'deconstituted' -about 300 of our members had by that time joined the CH Club and the Club 'accepted' all of us (about 1,500) as a 'corporate body', known as 'CHCOGA' (The Christ's Hospital Club Old Girls' Association). We no longer had to have audited accounts or hold an Annual General meeting, but we continued to manage our own affairs, publish a newsletter, organise reunions etc. As Chair, I became a member of the CH Club Management Committee. In effect we were like a regional grouping of the CH Club, although not all our members were members of the Club itself.

b) In 2004 we merged completely with the CH Club. By then 600 or our 1,400 or so members had joined as individuals, so in return for CHCOGA's £12K assets, the CH Club accepted the rest on a 'for life' membership basis, allowing them the same benefits as all other members of the Club.

c) By 2005 The Club's members, after consultation, had agreed that the Club should be dissolved and its members join the 'for free' Christ's Hospital Association - which is different from either previous model of an alumni association as it is financed and managed by the Foundation through the Clerk's Office. The CHA embraces not only former Club members but all known Old Blues, whether or not they ever belonged to either alumni association in the past.

d) The Club's assets were handed over to the Foundation but are ringfenced. The interest on those assets supports the provision of The Old Blue to CHA members. The assets themselves are held securely (I don't recall if there was a time limit on this.....) against the day when, if the CHA turned out to be unsuccessful, the Club could be reconstituted.

Any questions, please ask!

Sorry. I did not answer your last question.
The first 'Advisory Board' was appointed in 2004 on a 'shadow' basis. It contained two members of the previous CH Club Management Committee, a representative from the Council of Almoners and a number of others who were chosen to represent an age and gender balance across the entire scope of Old Bluedom. The first Chair was John Gower (do you have Who's Blue 1997?). The Advisory Board has power to co-opt and in its first year did so, I think twice.
Over the next two years the membership of the Board began to become formalised through a process of self nomination (against an invitation in the December 2005 Old Blue), with the candidates presenting themselves before a 'Nominations Committee' appointed by the Advisory Board. In the December 2006 Old Blue there will be a further call for self-nomination (against a profile of skills/experience, taking account of age and gender, which has been established for the overall good running of the Advisory Board).
John Gower, the first Chair, relocated to Singapore in April 2006 and his place as Chair was taken by Steve Webb - who's status is still that of Co-Opted member to the Board.
Again, any question, please ask!

Thank you very much for all of that information, I did wonder what had happened while I was away.

It sometimes feels like planet of the apes, the astronaut goes into suspended animation and wakes up to find his planet is controlled by apes. I leave the CH community for a few years and I come back to ???

By the way, planet Scone is available to anybody who loves good scones. Just think scone, cream and jam and float away to happy land!
