Sadly they haven't learnt to make the tea yet.
I've done that too - now trying to find a recording of rouse!

The "Official" words for the Bugle Call "Rouse" are-----

"Get out of bed --- Get out of bed "

The three Silver Bugles used to be coached by Bill Bailey (Bandmaster) from a book which had all the calls for Infantry and Cavalry, -----which were played during the march into Tea.

I wonder when that stopped ?

upon which I presume you were required to break into a trot, before a canter and eventually the charge.
Doesn't make sense - the food gave you the trots OK, and famine resulted in a charge but the canter? Was that because Bill Bailey wanted to go home or was he just chantankerous?

I'll get my coat

A fag, more like.

However in the good old days, people smoked where and when they wanted.

'Bill' usually had a ciggy on the go during band-practice.....

... and as for 'Phallic' Mathews during his science lessons....

............ and of course 'fag' is another word which has changed its meaning over the years - see the Hertford Memories strand.

Scouts were supposed to teach you to be resourceful and to improvise -----

This evening, as I got out of the car, in the Church Car Park,--- I found that there was a lot of Ice, and I very nearly came a cropper, since I was wearing leather-soled shoes.

After the Carol Service (And my one-of-nine Lesson) the temperature had dropped even further and the whole slope was an Ice Rink. --- What to do ?

I removed my shoes and walked in my socks to the car (about 30 yards).
This confirmed the opinion of most of the Congregation, that Neill is not only Notorious -- but mad as a hatter !

Moral --- It is better to have cold feet, --- than a broken leg !!

I do agree, I have often taken my shoes off in mud etc, feet are far easier to wash.
