Swine flu - school closing for a week

Re: Swine flu - school closing for a week
Thanks Angela. Well, we had a late-night trip to hospital, following a call to the out-of-hours doctor. He wanted her examined again because her temperature just wouldn't come down, she still had rigors, and the Ondansetron was wearing off too quickly and she was reaching again. When we got there we had to wait for someone to come out and put a mask over her mouth and nose, then we were escorted through reception to a room and asked not to leave it. The doctor examined her again, her temperature was 40.2 and we had to keep waking her up to answer his questions, she was falling asleep that quickly! He increased the Ondansetron to the adult dose and said to ignore the paracetamol and ibuprofen daily dosage limits and keep alternating both every four hours. He said that he too, was concerned with her heart which was 'zipping along', but that when we get on top of the temperature it will slow it down. He said there wasn't really anything else he could suggest that I wasn't already doing, and that if the sickness started up again she had to go back immediately. We were then escorted back out of the building again.
So she slept most of the night with her head in a sickbowl, feeling sick but not actually being sick, needs to be practically carried to the toilet because she hasn't the strength to walk, still has a high temperature, is coughing and sniffing and breathing rapidly, and is making moaning sounds in her sleep. But now when she is awake she is telling me how ill she feels, that all of her body hurts, which is something she wasn't able to do for the last two or three days when she was having trouble answering a question, let alone string a sentence together, so I'm hoping that's a sign of improvement
Thanks so much for all your good wishes, when she's a bit more alert I'll show them to her

What a relief that she can speak properly now! The first thing I looked for this morning was a post from you, lonelymom, & am so glad to read that she's at least been assessed at hospital. Things look a teeny bit more encouraging now. I do hope you're able to get a few catnaps, you must be absolutely shattered. Thank you so much for giving us progress reports; she sounds a tough little cookie, I'm sure she'll see this wretched illness off in a few days' time. Then it'll be plenty of rest & recuperation - for all of you!

I'm rather pleased I contracted it on the first outbreak, though Jan didn't !
I've been told by our GP's surgery that when there is sufficient vaccination doses, I'll be offered one.
Apparently, unless you've had swine-flu confirmed by a nasal or mouth swab, you ain't had it.
I hope the staff at Horsham cope well. I remember the ordinary flu outbreaks in the 60's.

Like Annie I looked for news of your daughter lonelymom. I hope that it means she has turned the corner and will soon be feeling a lot better. Try to take care of yourself too.

I know it's probably like teaching 'grannie to suck eggs', but as someone who's had it.....
Plenty, and I mean plenty, of warm drinks; Paracetamol which does help to reduce the fever; a warm but well ventilated bedroom.
As I've said on the swine-flu thread before, the severity of the illness varies so very much from person to person.

Me too! Ran down this morning to check for news. Very good that she's telling you how she feels! How I wish that I were near and could help. Thinking of you lots!Katharine wrote:Like Annie I looked for news of your daughter lonelymom. I hope that it means she has turned the corner and will soon be feeling a lot better. Re: Swine flu - school closing for a week
Yes, it does seem to vary lots. My eldest is fairing much better, has the headache, aches, lethargy, slight temperature, cough etc, but is generally doing okay. It's obviously hit the youngest harder. Incidentally, the hospital doctor did say last night to give her ICE COLD drinks, rather than tap water cold, to help bring her temperature down, I'd never heard that advice before!
Apparently they are no longer doing swabs to confirm diagnosis. A call to the swine flu pandemic line, followed by a detailed telephone questionnaire about symptoms, is enough to generate a unique code which you take up to your chemist with ID for yourself and the patient, and you will be issued with Tamiflu.
Thanks everyone, I really, really mean that!

I`m so pleased to hear things are looking up for her!
Yes one of the "problems" is that they are no longer testing for swine flu so if someone isn`t feeling 100% they may or may not have swine flu. School semed to be dealing with the high temperatues in the HC, otherwise it`s been bedrest.

Fingers crossed Lonelymom, that this is the beginning of the recovery and that your lovely daughters go from strength to strength
Our two are at home now and there is plenty of sniffing and sneezing going on and husband is complaining that since he picked them up from CH he has had a terrible headache (hypochondriac!) so I've no idea what the week holds for us.

... meant to say, my last memory of CH closing was in October 2003 when there was no gas and therefore no heating!

I just wanted to add my best wishes and thoughts to lonelymon and anyone else suffering. Really pleased that your younger daughter has got a bit better; that's definitely a lot better than getting a bit worse....if you get my drift!
Take care everyone.

So pleased your daughter seems to be a little better, Lonelymom. It must have been a scary time for all of you - hope her recovery continues speedily.

Re: Swine flu - school closing for a week
Thanks. She did appear a bit brighter this morning, and I was much happier, but since then she seems to have got a bit worse again. I suppose there will be ups and downs for the next few days, I'm just hoping for another up soon. At least the sickness has stopped now, although she has only had two very thin slices of apple in the last 3 days so there probably isn't anything left to bring up. She looks colourless and hasn't been awake for more than a couple of minutes at a time since mid morning, and has stopped talking to me again, just nodding when I ask if she needs a sip of water. I'll ring the doctor again tomorrow if there's no improvement overnight, but I'm keeping everything crossed that there will be!
