Messages from some of the class of 86 / 87...

Tom Barnard (BaA, LaA 1981 – 1987)Both Tom and wife Elaine are Opera Singers. Tom works full time as a chorister with The Royal Opera House and Elaine is freelance. They have two children, Katie (3) and Theo (1).

Juliana Crombie (neé Matthews) (1's and Col A, 1980-87)
Sadly, I will not be able to attend the reunion. With only a few months notice it was not practical to organise travel from my home in Australia. I am also a new Mum and this is around the first birthday of my daughter Olivia, so the grandparents are keen to share her first birthday with her.
I am very sad not to be able to attend, if nothing else out of absolute curiosity about what everyone looks like, has been doing, etc. I notice from some of the RSVPs that many colleagues have young families so it would have been lovely to see them all. I have had some emails from people but I have been very stretched for time to reply as being a Mum and wife to a busy man are taking most of my time.

Dave Bell (LHB, LHA 1981 – 1987)
Dave Bell lives in Manchester with his wife Suzy and three children Joshua (9), Samuel (6) and Alethea (3). Dave works as a specialist Registrar in Plastic Surgery, and says he has a spare room if any old classmates are ever passing through.

Julian Williams (LHA 1981-1987)
G'day,
Many thanks for the invitation to the 20 year reunion for the classes of 1986 and 1987 in September. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend.
As one of those people who have fallen off the edge of the world since leaving C.H. it would have been good to see the old place again and catch up on old times.
It has been a long time since I had any contact with anyone from C.H. so I cannot provide much in the way of news of any other Old Blues. I was lucky enough to work with Chris Amis on a few occasions a few years ago. He was then and I hope still is, a well respected barrister working out of the Temple in London. The odd chance meeting with others aside, that is pretty much it.
As far as my own news is concerned, I now live in Perth in sunny Western Australia and am married to Karen (a local “sheila”) and we have three kids. I work for the West Australian Director of Public Prosecutions as a corporate manager, which is pretty much the line of work I have been in since leaving University. I can thoroughly recommend the ex-pat life to any Old Blues who are considering it. A bit of sunshine makes a world of difference and you simply cannot beat falling in the pool at the end of a hard day at work.

David Monaghan (LaA 1981 – 1986)
Folks,
I will not be able to attend the reunion on 16/09/07.
I'm now living in Edinburgh with my wife Alison and 14 month-old daughter Heather. After a first degree in Metallurgy at Oxford I stayed on to do a DPhil and a post-doctoral research fellowship that some unkind people commented was actually a caving scholarship because I seemed to spend more time underground than in the laboratory.
In 1995, after nine years, academia began to lose its appeal and I got a job in IT with The Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh. I'm now an IT Project Manager by profession: until recently I specialised in Internet banking, but now I am moving into a consultancy role helping to recover projects that are in trouble. Apparently this is because I know what I am talking about, which is a surprise to me.
In my spare time I try to get outside: planting trees with a local conservation group (where I met Alison), gardening, working on the allotment or exploring the countryside around Edinburgh. However we've just moved to a house that will need a lot of work, so I don't expect to get much spare time in the near future.
Regards
David Monaghan

Bill Hayton (MaA 1980 – 1986)
Bill Hayton is unable to attend as he is working abroad, as the Vietnam reporter for the BBC.

Matthew Fooks (ThA 1980 – 87)

After leaving school, went to St Luke’s college of Education at Exeter University, 4yr degree course resulting in a trained but reluctant PE teacher. Decided against the Education route and joined the Dorset Police. Did 13 years in Dorset Police in various posts in various places in various ranks ending up as a Chief Inspector and Operations Manager. This seemed to be the last post or role that really involved operational policing before you got swamped with politics and bureaucracy, which led to my latest career move. Currently 2 years into a 3 year sabbatical away from the police working in the private sector (Under the guise of Leadership training / development). Working for "John Smith & Son Group" who run bookshops of the same name at universities in UK, Ireland and Botswana. I hold the title of Executive assistant (for which you can read Jack of all trades.... too many hours). Back to the Police in July 2007?...who knows.
Married for 12 years with three kids aged 8 (Martha) 5 (Emily) and 3 (Sam). Still living in Dorset.
Plans for the future? work less, find some kind of a work life balance, play more (some) golf.

what a great day!

Post by mvgrogan »

Thanks to all involved for a great day on Saturday.

The weather was beautiful, the school has changed but still looks as impressive as ever and the food was surprisingly edible.

It was a real pleasure to see everyone, even those it took a while to recognise! I counted 26 of us in total. It was a shame that only three girls from 87 were there - and none from 86! Even Vicci came along... and she left Hertford before the move!

Also great to see so many families - the children all seemed to have fun, even in chapel where they all joined in so enthusiastically!

I have a few photos I would be happy to share, if I can work out how to post them here somewhere!

Let's do it again next year for our 20th...

Quite a nostalgic visit for me on Saturday, and just great to get to talk to everyone again. I was surprised that the numbers were so low. I suppose that some people would have no interest in this sort of thing, and perhaps more that would be concerned about having to mix and mingle with people after twenty years. Anyway, it was a very mellow day of poking around at CH, and a lot of reminiscing and catching up on things. It was great to go into chapel (it was...) and hear Adrian Bawtree pull all the stops out on the organ, and then belt out the Foundation Hymn. The band looked good too.

A few of us finished the day standing around on big-side (behind the music school), just taking it all in. If you didn't go, you missed a great day.

Thanks to Zoe Mitchell for co-ordinating this.
