HITLER YOUTH AT HOUSIE

There is some discussion in the national Press at the moment about parties of Hitler Youths visiting England in 1937-39 to attend Scout camps, go on cycle tours, etc. I have a very clear memory of being told by my housemaster, Mr TE Archbold (Archie), in the early 1950s that at least one Hitler Youth had been at Housie just before the war. The only other thing I recall is that Archie said that this young man had made himself very unpopular.
Can anyone shed any further light on this?

Not unless she'd undergone a sex change, she wasn't. The Hitler Youth was strictly for boys. She was probably a member of the BDM (Bund deutscher Mädel), which was the equivalent for girls. That doesn't make her a Nazi. The resistance heroine Sophie Scholl was a member in her younger days.

Apparently it was quite easy to spot them, they were the ones peddling around with one arm in permanent "heil" position. No wonder they lost.

That was just to indicate they were turning right, in case anyone didn't realise.

I'd always understood that the Hitler Youth guy returned to Horsham after the war and actually became a member of the ancillary staff at CH, eventually becoming the supervisor of the School Wardrobe in the 1960s/70s. Isn't that right?

BTW -- any boy who WASN'T a member of the Hitler Youth was in for a rough time, possibly because of dis-ablement, poor eyesight , and the like --- they wanted blue eyed Blondes (Down JR -- these were boys !) in pefect condition.
In all my years in Germany, I only met ONE avowed Nazi, who had been a member of the Waffen SS, and who claimed that they were the best Soldiers in the War --- I agreed with him -- they WERE !

Al the other Nazis ? "Well of course, we were never Nazis --- but we had to obey orders" !

I suspect that many of them were damaged for life. We had a general manager in Frankfurt who was anti- Jew to the extent that he forced Jewish staff to resign by making life hell.

I was very dissatisfied with the quality of work coming out of Frankfurt - as he well knew. One day during an inspection I found a bale of well over a cubic metre of toilet paper for 20 staff in the store room. Mentioning this to him I accepted that there were savings to be made by buying in bulk but was that not just a little over the top? "No, David. You have to remember that we Germans produce a lot of crap".

We got rid of him on umpteen counts including fraud (and I think embezzlement) but he made so many unsuccessful appeals to the Labour courts that he ran out of money and they ran out of patience.

I may have told this story, on another Thread --- but I make no apology !

We had, in Germany, in the 50s a Jewish Padre, who looked after the Jewish Troops.

He had been at Frankfurt University, and his Tutor had him thrown out--- because he was a Jew.

He confided in me that, now, after the War------- he had been approached by that same Tutor, -- for a job, and he took immense delight in employing him !!!!!

He also pointed out to me --- (We were very good friends), that the Christian Principle of Forgiveness, did not apply to him --- and he was only applying "An eye for an eye"

If I remember you correctly, JR, you would have made a good Hitler Junge.

You can't blame anyone for being in the HJ, any more than you can "blame" anyone at CH for having been in the CCF. It was possible not to be, just about, but it made life very uncomfortable (and drew seriously unwanted attention to your family). And it was quite fun, by all accounts.

I knew a Jew here (in Germany) once who, having spent the war hiding in the woods, found that when he emerged (being tall and blond) he had Russian soldiers giving him Nazi salutes and shouting "Hitlair Yugend".

Not very civilized you might think, but my daughter was spat at by a woman in a rural Devon supermarket because the latter had heard (correctly) that she had a German mother. And once on the M11 a passing driver was so busy giving my German-registered car a Nazi salute that he almost came off the road.

My son had to give a talk at college which was supposed to be rousing. His course is "Access Higher Education" so it is 20-30 year olds who 'dropped out" but now want to go to University, so a pretty savvy bunch. The speech was only short, 300 words or so but he got an ovation t, and one told him he sounded like Hitler, which he took as a compliment as that had been the idea. He got a very good mark for it too.
