HOPE

Post by englishangel »

I know a lot of you on here are really worried about the future of your children regarding education, and each step seems fraught with problems so I want to give all you good (enough) parents some hope.

I went to CH and then on to University, met my husband there, he had come from a working class family and went to grammar school and thence to University.

Our son was a clever/lazy student and failed his 11+ so went to an Upper School, we are in a grammar area so not even a comprehensive.
Then he had appendicitis/peritonitis at 13 and was very ill for two weeks, this resulted in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for most of his teens and meant he didn't get much of an education.
At 19 he started to feel better and at 21 did evening classes to get his English and Maths GCSEs and this year age 24 he is doing an Access Higher Education course.
Yesterday he was offered a place at his first choice university, (Kent) he already had offers at two others, and was turned down by two.

I'll let you know when he gets his First :?

People complain about education these days, but it seems to me that if you don't do too well at school, for whatever reason, there are far more opportunities now to catch up later. That's got to be a good thing - in our day it was much more make or break. Some people are just late developers.

Well done to your son, he must have worked hard for it since his recovery.

Oh no - Angela has a son of whom she is rightly very proud. My son would be doing the same if he hadn't had the Chronic Fatigue and medication. He can't join the army for 4 years so is going to get an allied degree.

Why should I be offended by Mary's pride in her son, NEILL? Ridiculous.

Pming you, Mary.

Wasn't it Albert Einstein who rightly said that he was STILL learning, only a few years before his death ?

Anyone who considers they have no more to learn - at any stage in their life - has surely learnt (or understood)very little?

What happened to part-time degrees, or day release and evening classes? There is also the Open University.

Congratulations to your son, Mary. My stepdaughter enjoyed her time at Kent.

His baby sister finishes 3 years at Canterbury Christ Church this year so she is delighted, she will have somewhere to stay when she goes back to visit her friends.
