Servants Bells
Does any one know the purpose of the bell system which was certainly in situ in Coleridge " A" day room up to the nineteen fifties ? I believe that there was another installed in the Boot room at the far end of the changing room and that it was something to do with summoning the domestic staff from somewhere. I cannot recall that it was ever used in my time but well might have been in the earliest days at CH.

Am I going crazy or do I correctly remember "speaking tubes" in Wards? I think that they went between the first and second floor landings and just outside the Wardmistress' room on the ground floor. I even have a vague recollection of pouring water into one in the vague hope that it would pour all over Lily Thompson.

I don't even remember seeing it let alone it being used in Col A between 1954 and 1961
