Derek Baker

Post by michael scuffil »

The list of deceased OBs in the latest CHOBA newsletter includes the name of Derek Baker. This news seems to have appeared nowhere else, which, seeing he was headmaster, I find decidedly odd.

I was equally surprised to see the news and yet none of it anywhere else. Baker was my headmaster and appointed me Senior Grecian and put me up for the Morehead Scholarship, so I have much to thank him for. I think he had a rough ride as Headmaster and no doubt had issues on the "merger" as he left shortly afterwards. Perhaps squeezed by the Governors? Anyway I have many good memories of dinners at the House and also my Mum palying the piano with Kirkup in his sitting room. I remember he went off to Texas to teach history for a while but never found out what he did after that. RIP.

I spotted his death in the Daily Telegraph last week and advised the CH office.
