Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH
I have to say that in all my time at CH, '58-'63, I don't re-call any transfers at all.
I seem to remember one grecian leaving half a year early with the excuse, that 'he had been accepted to uni early'. Other rumours abounded about a liason with a female member of domestic staff.

I thought Phillips and Bostock were moved from MaA to BaB around 60-61. Never knew why, and didn't ask.

I have looked through some of my collection of C H Club Rolls of Members and found a vast number of Old Blues who transferred between houses during their time at Horsham. How many stories could be told of the why and the wherefore ?
I offer a few from various years but the list is pretty extensive.

R. Phillips MA and BB 54-61
G.H. Bostock MA BB 54-62
Strange that they only moved literally next door to their new House. Perhaps this was not therefore a misdemeanour of any sort.

While I don't know the reason, I very much doubt if it was for any wrong-doing on their part. I suspect it may be more that the authorities wanted a fresh influx at the top in BaB.Strange that they only moved literally next door to their new House. Perhaps this was not therefore a misdemeanour of any sort.

I suggest you look at the thread on Michael Cherniavsky of April of this year for more information.LongGone wrote:While I don't know the reason, I very much doubt if it was for any wrong-doing on their part. Quite right. Apparently I remembered a little more in April than now. Seems my memory is going downhill fast!

"I have to say that in all my time at CH, '58-'63, I don't re-call any transfers at all." JR
JR forgets that his last house captain in ColB was a transfer from MaA (Charlie Rowlands).
Others not mentioned above around that time:
John Watts from ThB to BaB 1959 (to be house captain)
Graham Riches from ThB to MaB 1959 (ditto)
JP ('Chang') Young from MaA to MidA 1961 (to get a study, I think)
Noel Kirker from ThB to BaB 1961 (see Phillips and Bostock above)
Peter Scott the doctor's son from ThB to LaB 1962 (to be house captain)
Michael Pitcher from ThB to ThA 1962 (to be senior grecian; as he was junior to Randal Cousins the existing house captain of ThB, it would have created a somewhat embarrassing situation; his departure also meant a study for me, which I was angling to get through a transfer of my own)
In addition to these organizational moves, someone was transferred from BaB to ThB because he was a sex abuser and it was thought John Page could keep an eye on him. But he got up everyone's nose (metaphorically) and left within months.

'Transported'? No recollection of that word being used. Just 'moved' I think.
Two from Col B late 40s I think or early 50s - JT Tabor to Mid A and MJ Calle (to one of the Maines?) . Both were monitors in Col B before their move so I suspect they were probably shifted tio give them a shot at House Captain..

I'm pretty sure that Tabor ended his CH career as house captain of Mid A.

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH
During my 9 years (1944-53) in Col.B four boys were transferred to other houses, in all cases, I believe, due to lack of suitable candidates for house captain in the receiving house. As well as the two mentioned by postwarblue there was also MC Griffiths to Mid B in 1945 and DH Calam in 1952 (to which house I can't remember).
M Calle went to Maine A.

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH
There were two common reasons for transfers 'at the top'. One was to provide a house captain for a house with no suitable candidates. The other was to provide a study for a third-year grecian who, by general consent, had a right to one. The situation in ThB in my year provided examples of both. In our penultimate year, we had no third-year grecians, but four second-year grecians who were all staying on, in order of seniority: Cousins (the house captain), Pitcher, me, Scott. I at least started putting out feelers for a transfer (whether Scott did, I don't know). We then heard that Scott was going to LaB to be house captain (that's his problem, I thought, I wouldn't have gone to LaB even for a study). So I intensified my feelers. And then we heard that Pitcher might be going to ThA (where as head NCO in the CCF he would be paired with John Page, the officer i/c of the CCF). ThA wouldn't otherwise have had a third-year grecian, and they were more than half expecting an import. Then the strange rumour started going round that Pitcher was to be senior grecian, which would have left a curious situation had he stayed in ThB (not least because Cousins had been our year's 'natural' SG from the word go). ThA, meanwhile, though expecting an import, weren't expecting their import to be senior grecian, and I think this situation was unique. It was a very neat solution all round. (As I was made an honorary house-captain for no good reason other than that I was a friend of Pitcher's, ThB may be said to have had four 'house captains' that year. Probably a record, certainly surpassing our three (Arnold (TB), Watts(BaB), Riches(MaB)) three years earlier.)
