Hockey at CH in London

Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, but that's still CH related.

Try http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... ter-duncan

and scroll forward to about 16m48s (go in a minute or so early ) and you'll see a photograph I certainly have never seen before.

Sorry to disappoint you, postwarblue, but that photo has been around for some time. That variant of hockey was still played on the asphalt in the early 1950s; the pace was fast and furious, the rules were very, very few, and it was responsible for many cuts and bruises.

Unfortunately the BBC blocks overseas readers from viewing movies: not sure why, since all other content is available. I am amazed there were so few serious injuries during those games. The skates from that era were very unforgiving, as were the asphalt and brick walls. When I emigrated to Canada the style of play in the NHL seemed very familiar, no quarter given. The standard joke was "I went to a fight last night and a hockey game broke out".

That variant seemed to be on foot; what we played was on roller skates. ISTR that the variant on bicycles (which only monitors could have at CH) was specifically banned

I also remember asphalt hockey, along with 'tip and run' cricket.

Roller skates. I doubt very much that the boys in Newgate Street would have been able to afford roller skates, which muit have been rare and expensive prior to 1903.
I should have mentioned that the picture of the Newgate Street hockey players comes from the C.H.Museum.
