Last night antics
What did you get up to on your last night at CH?
I honestly don't remember much about it other than I woke up just before 7am in a study in Maine A God only knows how I got there.

My last night they wanted to make a millenium dome in the quad - they got a few streamers over the statue, gave Edward VI a large spliff and Paul Carter built a 'porn tractor' that would take him to Woking...
Ours was also the last year of the 'midnight band' - we were 'restricted to the Quad and staff were at the Grecian's Arches - so we ent thruogh the art school car park! We got as far as Maine A before bidding a hasty retreat...
We were also going to remove most of the chapel fittings and put them in the quad - altar etc but Geezer decided he'd play the organ with all the stops out so that put a stop on that...

I seem to remember the year that I left Gladdings mini got pushed into the cloisters and sectioned of with chain fencing. I not sure breaking the handbrake cable was part of the plan though...
There was also an idea, half cocked at best, to herd a flock of sheep from the far side of bigside into the quad. Tables from dining hall were made into a makeshift pen, but the resulting sheep never emerged.
Rugby posts ended up being propped up against dining hall and the statue in the middle of the quad was covered in coats stolen from the junior houses - although I'm questioning myself on this point. It might have been a different year that has blurred into my memory.

i cant remember, too drunk.
oh wait, i remember some things (we had been told we would be kicked out if we went into the quad and that there would be two deputy heads sitting on the statue all night so no real fun) but i will not implicate the individuals involved!

I think Mr Gladding must have dreaded the last night of term - especially has he had 2 minis! These always seemed to be regarded as a legitimate target by Peele A who one year managed to sandwich one of them at the back entrance to the house courtyard, in between Peele A and Peele B's changing rooms. By the time we left Gladding seemed to have realised his wheels were under threat and locked up his pride and joys in a secure location. My last night of term was crap 'cos it rained - we tried sleeping in the quad by amassing a load of mattresses. Sadly someone had hooked up a TV which was playing a video of Abba's last concert way too loud for my liking. Alas, the inclement weather and Dancing Queen meant I only managed half an hour's sleep.

Never mind coats . . . .
In my first year in LHA, 1973, we woke up on the last day of the summer term to find that all our breeches had gone. The contents of the pockets had been neatly left in a pile on our bedside cupboards (we had cupboards, not settles, in Leigh hunt). Whilst we were all panicking about what to do, a School Monitor appeared with a pile of breeches which was dumped in the middle of the dorm. We later found out that some leavers had managed to collect breeches from all the junior houses and made a huge pile in the middle of the quad. The head (DHN) had woken up early to go for a walk and had seen them at around 6.30am. He rushed off to wake the Senior Grecian who subsequently got as many School Monitors up as he could and they sorted them and redistributed them by before 7.30am. It's such a pity we didn't see "breeches mountain".Rumour had it that it was a retty huge pile !

Most of the locks used to be pretty 'breakable' and winodws could always be opened...Richard Ruck wrote:Ermmm, not in those days it wasn't.Laura M wrote:Or maybe it was that mighty Ba.A was just such an impenatrable fortress.....
Remember, all these things were possible because the doors were never locked.

not just the midnight band, your year seemed to be the last year to do all kinds of cool stuff.
though to be fair, you did make the most of it, iirc!
