Mr Sutcliffe was my housemaster for a few years after our previous housemaster left for *ahem* things he shouldn't have done. I rememebr his attempts to engage us in philosophical conversations which I didn't really appreciate at the time which now I think was a shame. He was always softly spoken and I think he only shouted once in the 3 years I was in his house, stunning us all into silence. I seem to rememeber someone finding out the hard way one lucnhtime that he could lip read. glad he got rid of the sideburns!

Some things are best left unsaid, especially if we don't want to get sued

Funny, all my friends and family use the phrase "b....er grips" to describe side burns, and all probably due to this guy.

If I am right then the grips fashion was around the same time that the word "zob" was in fashion, to describe a certain house master.

"Gripper" was not only my housemaster but also my maths teacher. I remember my heart sinking when i discovered he would be teaching me, but as things worked out he was fantastic, very patient and knew how to get the best out of one as a pupil. The rotating head habit he adopted when listening to you explain why you were a few minutes late used to annoy all of us followed by the "now look here young man" catchphrase, i always found that condescending and was close to replying "yes old man!" He held great respect in the house and certainly more than the previous housemaster, Mr.P.Webb who i think ended up on a houseboat in Norfolk? No doubt with a bottle of whiskey by his side! :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers:
