No idea! The Carmen thing had a verse specifically for the girls school though. I think

All this singing lark was never my cup of tea. I even stayed in BaB on the night of the house singing competition to avoid singing!

No idea about that - I have a vague memory but thats all - have only been to 2 Leavers services - Mr C says it`s a prayer, the Hertford Grace

Did you mean "Lord dismiss us with thy blessing"? It had an emotional line about "Those who here shall meet no more" and sung after you had heard the Charge, and received your Bible,brought out the hankies.

and did have that line Midget, yes i was sobbing when we had to sing it, cried at singing foundation hymn, was fine until thehead stood infront of us and said charge i lost it, so the hertford grace was a bit of ablur

LOTS of things muddled here.
a) From Hertford, we used to sing 'Old Lang Syne' and 'Goodbyee Don't Cryee' as the school train went under the Arches before Liverpool Street Station, on the way home at the end of term.

b) Yes every end of term service did include the Hymn from A and M : 'Lord Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing ......' (no 458) (and similarly at the beginning of every term included 'Lord Behold Us with Thy Blessing.....'(no 457).)

c) At Hertford the School Song was the Carmen ('Unum Concentum Tollite.....') which we had to learn off pat in our first term. This is known at Horsham as The Votum - and there is one verse in each which is different. The Votum now pertains.

There was also the Foundation Hymn - 'Praise the Lord for Our Foundation' - words by AW Upcott CH 1902-1919 and music by R Wilkinson CH 1902-1929. Again, there is one verse different in the girls' (Hertford) and the boys' version. The boys' version (with the verse about 'Spacious dwelling, ringed with Downs and woodlands fair'.....) now pertains.

Hope this clarifies things for everyone who is obviously not such a dinasaur as I am!

PS The Hertford Grace is something different again.
Music written by Jean Taverner, Head of Music at Hertford 1963-1985, to the words of the Grace : May the Grace of Christ our Saviour....now (justifiably) finding its place in the Christ's Hospital Hymnbook in the 21st Century.

I agree with those who say that in emotional times it is difficult to sing this (and the Foundation Hymn) without controlling the tears. You are not alone!

Thanks Barbara for spelling 'dinausaur' correctly (dohhh!). But I am not sure about 'Goodbyeee Don't Cryeee' being particularly 2's. I seem to remember echoes of this and that reverberating down the train as we approached Liverpool Street, and freedom. Although I acknowledge its possible we sang it in House before departing, rather than on the train. What do other members of the Forum remember?......

I remember feeling deprived because I never travelled on the school train! I lived in Harpenden, the other side of Hertfordshire when I started and then we moved to High Cross 2 miles north of Ware so only about 5 miles from the school. - So no comment on singing in the train!

I don't remember singing that in 2's when I was there - must have fizzled out by then I guess. We didn't sing on the train either, not that I would have anyway!
