St. Matthew's day 08
The right hand edges are cut off because they are too big. Also I'm slightly drum biased as you can probably tell!
You can see the album at http://www.new.facebook.com/photo.php?p ... 074&ref=mf You might have to have facebook, not sure

They are trying to march AND play quite a complicated riff (?) at the same time.

.. and the drummers ranks are near perfectly straight.
The late 'Bill' Bailey would have been proud.

Re: St. Matthew's day 08
I'm very proud of 'my little drummers'! I was the senior drummer last year.
Gosh we really look grumpy don't we!! It's mostly a look of sheer concentration - having to keep on the right foot, watch both ways down the line to keep straight, play in time, stick drill, getting it right... drummers have a hard time in band! Especially in Beating Retreat. We had to memorise the formations around the Quad whilst everyone else just had to follow us and moan when we got it wrong!
I watched the band (I mean drummers ) today at open day and gave them 9 out of 10! wheeling was a bit shoddy, they don't seem to have the hang of it yet.

Yeh.. it's not just the drums that make up the band!
There is 'Bugle Band' every Tuesday and Friday instead of full band at lunch parade... but that's started to become a bit of a drum thing.
Were you a bugler in the band then?

From joing Coleridge B, until leaving. Senior Bugler eventually.
Whenever I hear Last Post, the hairs on the back of my neck still hackle up and I get goose pimples.
Nothing like being the solo performer at The Retreat, which in my day, was an evening parade, (as it should be), a day or so before the last day of summer term.

Re: St. Matthew's day 08
I think you're right, as usual John.
The Retreat IS a military evening evening parade.
I do find it a shame it now has to be performed in the afternoon of leaving.

It would have been nice to 'beat the retreat' in the evening with the evening sun and light. Especially when the last post and the day thou gavest is played at the end.

It was nice and for leavers, even quite moving.Alice Goble wrote:It would have been nice to 'beat the retreat' in the evening with the evening sun and light. Especially when the last post and the day thou gavest is played at the end.
Quite emotional when you realise that after the Retreat, it was leave everything, instrument, clothes, friends....a whole way of life.
