Senior Grecian's privileges
When I was at CH there was a story that the Senior Grecian was allowed to get married. I do know if this was based on fact.
However, I have just read Trollope's history of CH (1834), and he tells the story that in 1695 a boy and a girl were left, separately, a large sum by two wealthy citizens. They married one another at Guildhall chapel, accompanied by some Governors, and a train of their school fellows. The wedding dinner was in the Great Hall. Perhaps this is the origin of the story.
Was there a similar story at Hertford?

Re: Senior Grecian's privileges
I know I heard a rumour that if the SG was to marry he/she would be given Whites (the house not cricketing gear!) to live in for the remainder of the year.
They are the only pupil allowed to grow a beard at the school I believe... (the girls would like to try I suppose)
Chris Palgrave (brother of Simpn Palgrave who is sometimes on here) once rode to breakfast on a white house as was his privelege as a SG...

My son tells me that in the late seventies a few of the school monitors grew beards.

White's was a rather posh bachelor pad, I seem to remember. (You can interpret that how you like.) Did it pre-date the school, does anyone know?

Yes, I remember there were many rumours about Senior Grecians's privileges, including getting married, growing a beard and riding a white horse to breakfast… the first two of which I never exercised while at school. However, as mentioned by 'the great plum', I did ride a white horse to breakfast one morning; I left Thornton A as usual to find a white horse waiting for me (thanks to a couple of friends). There was also a rumour about being able to herd sheep through the City of London…

Re: Senior Grecian's privileges
We at Hertford had heard that the SG was allowed to marry - didn't know about the beards and white horses.
Freemen of the City of London are allowed to herd sheep across Tower Bridge, I don't think the SG is a Freeman but I know DR was, because she told us that if she was to be executed for treason she could be beheaded rather than hanged.

White's was built post 1902 (c.1914) I think and was for a Mr (Rev? White) I think.
Good to see you on here Chris...

Re: Senior Grecian's privileges
BC is indeed Band Captain.
Here are the perks
Bling (No one else has as many buttons!)
Being a Button Grecian- even if you aren't a monitor nor have academic buttons
A Key to Music School (Coolest place to be)
Radio interviews with local radio stations
The ability to make Lunch Parade as fast or slow as you want
Your name in Gold Letters on a board in the Band Room
Being the coolest guy/gal in school.
Of course I'm joking-- The SG gets the best stuff!

And lets face it Geoff, how many people actually consider the tubs to be an instrument?
