Why is tv rubbish all week then two decent programmes come along at the same time?

Having had an interest in the sciences (and many other things besides) Mr Kirby would attribute it to"The Law of Uiversal Bloodymindedness".

by leaving it shut for at least 10mins and then seeing if the bulb is warm!

put the hamster in the fridge, close the door for 10 mins, open door and see if its pupils are dilated.

I think you'll find that you can - but it does involve imaginary numbers and a couple of pages of proof and that it's not actually that useful except in some random black hole energy equation. But I haven't done it for ten years so can't remember exactly...
