Since when has a subscription been payable for the CCF?

I have this morning received a bill from CH for £30 being the subscription payable for Jonathan's membership of the school CCF. I was just a little surprised!
In my day, the corps was compulsory, but I am sure that no subscription was payable. Can anyone throw any light on when this business of charging for extra curricular activities started?
Will he be charged for helping backstage in the Theatre? Or singing in the Chapel Choir? I do hope not.

Vaguely remember a letter coming in the summer mailing about it - didn`t take any notice as my 2 aren`t involved in CCF. Not much point looking for it as I would have thrown it away straight away!!
Ian Stannard is the person to contact on the forum - he`d probably be able to tell you, but hasn`t looked in for ages as he told me he`s forgotten his password!

I suppose I thought that there was a principle that need airing here.
As for the password ...... i'm sure I've forgotten mine too but, bearing in mind a gradually disintegrating memory, I organise it to log on automatically. In fact I have even forgotten that one needs a password at all for the forum! I think I am probably permanently on even when I am off, so to speak.
However, I am sure JT can extricate IS from this one

I've no idea that CCF costs money - maybe your son should do something useful like Scouts instead!

I'm with Dave. CCF was compulsory, and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it.
A great grounding in firearms before 'plod' called me to Surrey Constabulary..

A "service" active is now compulsory, I believe, from UF onward - CCF, Scouts, Community Action, D of E, Ecology or Human Rights........

I would have thought that would have flown in the face of morality, given what the basic teaching of the CCF is !

MY son joined the Army Cadet Force, not allied to his school and only had to pay £8 deposit for uniform and kit plus 50p a week for the NAAFI.
I believe they were subsidised by the local regiment, The Royal Greenjackets.

You make that look like alternatives; CCF used to be compulsory on Friday afternoon whilst DofE was included in Scouts with Mountain Rescue a further option under scouts. Being totaly cut off from the real world, thew only "community action" was the school fire brigade and as for ecology (well, as Maureen Lipman would say, he has to have an "ology") and human rights - just don't tell the little thugs they have any rights beyond being flogged once a week ......
BTW we didn't pay anything for CCF (even uniforms) but had to buy Scout uniform and pay our own expenses (camp, specialist equipment .....) That was hard when paying for compulsory sports clothes, house badges on blazers etc. was a major problem to some parents.

I think they were all compulsory when I was at CH - at least for your UF and GE...

As an ex-regular (albeit I left 10 years ago) I am very surprised that a cadet (or, to be more accurate, his father!) has to pay to belong to the CCF. You do not say whether it is a one-off payment (perhaps a refundable deposit for the uniform?) or a termly or an annual charge, but whatever it is, it still surprises me. You might like to ring your local Army Cadet Force HQ in Bodmin on Telephone: 01208 73183 or e-mail:
enquiries@cornwallacf.co.uk. They run your local county ACF rather than the school-based CCFs, but if they are unable to give you more information they should be able to give you a name and telephone number/address of someone else to ask. Hope this helps,

P.S. I might add that I think that it is a bit high-handed of the school to impose a charge of this nature without (a) giving you some warning and (b) giving you some indication of what it concerns.

I pointed this thread out to Pete Kearsey, the CO of the CCF. Here is his reply:-
interesting reading I have tried to register so that I could
post a reply, but for some reason I cannot get into the bit
to activate myself, the decsion to introduce subs was not
taken lightly as you know the MOD heavily subsidise the CFF
and over the years the threat of cutting the cadets budget
has got closer and closer as they have cut the budgets for
the armed forces and this year will see a major cut the
£30 a year represents 84 pence per week per cadet which is
a lot less than the budget allocation from the MOD however
hopefully adding the two bits together I should be able to
maintain the training offered etc at the same standard for
some years to come, the Army Cadet Force and the ATC will be
facing the same problems as they are both classed as pre
service, the sea cadets being classed as a charity have
always had to find their own money.
It is funny that when the letters went out I invited parents
to get in touch and I only had one parent respond.

My cousin, Syd Hopgood, claims to be RSM of the Greenjackets and got his MBE last year for his efforts.
