Re: History in the fifties?
My first four years in the Upper (as a Dep history disappeared) went roughly as follows: LF - Mrs Hurst - can't remember. Quite a canter to cover from Romans to Bosworth I should think. Acted out Richard III in puppet theatre. LE - Gad Malins - Elizabethans, explorers, Drake etc UF - C O Healey - Ca...

Re: THE DOWNSIDE/AMPLEFORTH REPORT
My opinion is that that with the politicisation of the Church by the Emperor Constantine in the 4th century AD the RC church ceased to be credible as a Christian institution.

Re: New Victim comes forward
If only CH could see that its true interest is to lance the boil and get absolutely everything out into the open, rather than face years of negative drip-feed.

Re: RIP BRYAN MAGEE
Re the sicker nurse, Magee records a long, necessarily clandestine love affair that lasted until he left. Personally in these cases I do not fault the juvenile - and he over the age of consent - and I am ambivalent about the nurse except that today I think she would have bene struck off for an affai...

Re: RIP BRYAN MAGEE
Our County library got me a copy of 'Growing Up in a War'. I thought it might be in demand but no, their only copy was lurking in their store so available in a few days. VERY interesting. Almost a different CH from Longmate's! and indeed from mine (I arrived in the Upper Sept. 1947) - I found it dif...

Which is the book about CH please? It could bear interesting comparison to Noman Longmate's 'A Shaping Season'.

Re: CH Letter re support for abuse survivors
ca. 1947-49 there was a Yorkshire boy in Col B who was ruthlessly bullied by X... & his jackal Y... . One night the victim went to bed with his glasses on (no idea why). X & Y set upon him with their boleos as usual as soon as the monitor had gone. The victim discovered that his glasses were...

Re: Letter to Head Master
Until Callaghan's 1967 burst of populist dumbing down, in Common Law there were two levels of criminal act - felony and misdemeanour. One misdemeanour was misprision of felony, failure to report a criminal act of which one had knowledge. A serious sex assault on a child by a teacher would certainly ...

If Newsome invited Vilified to resign, did he give a reference to a future employer that did not mention this?

Re: Why does Eton make headlines....?
The point seems to be that Eton is offering VI form scholarships per se. It already has a core of scholarship boys and that has always been the case. Notoriously, the magic Boris was one of them, in distinction to Cameron who was a 'paid' entrant. The assumption that only rich kids can get there is ...

How did the the Grecians' Club, which presumably had a licence, get away with serving alcohol to under-age drinkers?

Re: Here's a hypothetical
In my opinion for a teacher to give alcohol to a pupil is, under any circumstances, utterly unprofessional and if discovered should lead to instant dismissal and removal from the profession.

I'm sure the RC 'church' will welcome Dobbie with open arms, he would fit right in.

For Harrow in the late 1860s I refer the reader John Addington Symonds' 'Memoirs', ed. Phyllis Grosskurth, Hutchinson 1984
