Re: INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS
And then you have places like Reading school - a state grammar (now academy trust) where boys have to pass an 11+ exam for entry but are then educated for free but which is also partly a state funded boarding school (boarding fees £11,946 pa with no scholarship discounts available) https://www.readi...

Re: Pocket money, Nausea and more
I was in Maine A shortly after your date (1953-60), but I don't recall any local rules similar to what you describe. Of course at that time Ma A had much more easy-going housemasters (Senior HM Tod/Barker, Junior HM Jesson-Dibley/Whitfeld) than La A under ALJ. Pocket money: I couldn't remember the ...

I beleive my Great Grandfather had some links with a band at CH around that time, he was a lab tech working with Kirby and also a Trumpeter (i have his silver cornet) having played in the GE Works band in Rugby pre moving to CH. His name was Laurie Sutherland. I know somewhere there was a photo of h...

Yes and we were taught maths at CH by a refugee from the closure of the SA Nuclear Program - Georg Stindt But the real big rush was in the late 90's and early 2000's when the rules came in in RSA demanding that whites not be promoted at all until certain %'s had been met in management and that to bi...

. He was South African, an accountant with a PhD, and he earned more serving food at CH than as an accountant in South Africa. My guess is that he was white in a country which has become anti-white. He would have been lucky to even have a job. Also cost of living in South Africa is a fraction of th...

Re: Cross-country runs
In the 80's Drills: LHB House drill was from LHB run down to sicker gate opposite corner of Dr's Lake, along pavement to main lodge, back up avenue to LHB, run at 6:30am, 3 laps for single 5 for a double, with UF monitors on cycle sometimes carrying hockey sticks to help encourage speed. Those drill...

The food was uniformly poor until about my deps when it was outsources to a company who wore Purple pinnies (cant remember name) It wasn't Fairfield, was it? But maybe I remember wrong, not the most important thing to recall from one's school days. I remember striking up a bit of a conversational b...

My mum knew how to cook just had no money, we also had home made pizzas but in the summer holidays being a very small farm we would get up have cereal (maybe depending on timings) get out onto the farm and start greasing machinery etc, then as soon as dew off the crops combining would start and con...

Re: Elizabeth Cairncross
Just read this and can add some detail to peoples memories - i was there during the 80's, merger was my UF, I was in LHB then LHA. The kid who was the clepto in LHB was Penman and his dad was landlord of the Boars Head bottom of Tower Hill. He was not starved, he was always a thin scrawny guy with b...

In the summer holidays of 88 i taught by step brother clutch control on a 125 motorcycle on the mile as i lived local and Peele gates were never locked Totally off topic; my mother's employer (who later became my semi-adopted father) taught me to drive on private property from when I was about 11 a...

Same in my day, 1985 to 1992. No doors ever locked, and no boundary security of any sort, except the mythical “night watchman” Haha, that brings back memories, the night watchman with 1200 acres to patrol. Ridiculous really, but I suppose it ticked a box in the insurance. Masters could drive their ...

Trying to remember whose mini (Gunning's ?) was placed sideways in the cloister archway whilst we there. I also still have a photo of the last morning of term on my deps (88?) when the year above had made a house of cards from toilet doors in the quad along with setting up a couple of classrooms (d...
