Flu in 1957

Does anyone remember being wrapped in scratchy blankets in bed in the infirmary and being given a powder which was supposed to lower our temperature? It was called a stew. I can't find any reference online to what we might have been given, and would be grateful for any information. It obviously didn...

Re: End of term

I'd love it if anyone in Twos was reading this and could recall, but I wonder did other houses do something like that? Only 'Old Lang Syne' under the railway arches near Liverpool Street, at the start of the holiday, in Fours I think. I can still remember the terrible fear of my hat coming off and ...

Re: "ALL GIRLS TOGETHER"

I have to say, that personally speaking, I thought the housemistresses were FAR worse than DR! Think of Millie and Miss Storm, amongst others :x But surely DR was responsible for the wardmistresses, and the infirmary, and all the teaching staff (including the needlework teacher), and the food? Know...

Certainly 'style' in MKP's time. A world record, or an Olympic gold medal, with a less than perfect style, would have been valueless. Speed only counted once a year, at the swimming gala.

Re:

I had hoped that the 'Screw Kick' was an invention of MKP (Miss Park) our elderly games mistress and that it had died after she left. It obviously didn't. I never had more than a white stripe, narrow ordinary tape. The orange stripes were made of quite different stuff. Normal progression was stripe...

Re: "ALL GIRLS TOGETHER"

This was even before my self-esteem hit total rock bottom after being sent inexplicably to coventry by three girls in my house year for a full term. . The same thing happened to me in the 4th form. I do not, to this day, understand the transgression that led to this cruel treatment. i once asked, s...

Re: "ALL GIRLS TOGETHER"

I am sure that I am not alone in remembering that the Biology textbooks had whole pages removed, before we saw them. These pages related to reproductive systems - possibly even in rabbits, let alone humans. But I can't believe that DR alone was reponsible for those excisions... it must have been th...

I could reminisce for hours about Dr Jory and Sister Summers' conversations JR, but I fear you might be tempted into more than one pint.

Re: "ALL GIRLS TOGETHER"

Regarding the little white pills, I am sure DR herself did not prescribe them. Dr Jory used to boast in later years that he could cope with all the ailments presented by little girls with one of two remedies - aspirin or the contraceptive pill. The former for aches pains and headaches and the latte...

Re: "ALL GIRLS TOGETHER"

I've a copy of this novel - actually it's more like a thinly disguised autobiography - written by the late Dr. Paula Neuss. She was in 2s, a contemporary of mine. Frighteningly intelligent & articulate but a friendly girl. She wrote amazing poetry. I recognised Mrs. Winston(e?) in the novel, as...

Eucryl Tooth Powder, also a very lurid pink! Don't laugh, I still use that!! The mint one is tastier though ... I suppose some of us are lucky still to need toothpaste. Can anyone else still hear 'Mabel' Mactier banging her gavel and announcing 'dentist today, A to K, Ward ....'. No recollection of...

Oh no, the tin on ebay is a shop display model, and 13" diameter. Wouldn't have fitted in our spongebags.

Thank goodness, anniexf. they were real. When you gave me the name, I googled it, and there's an empty Gibbs Dentifrice tin on ebay for £35.99. If we'd kept all those empty tins, ...

Re: Flu epidemic 1959

When I was in 5's, as a tiddler, I used to lick my toothpaste when in bed at night, if I felt really hungry. It was strawberry flavour.... I don't remember any ill effects! I think I remember using flat pink discs of Gibbs dry toothpaste. The toothbrush had to be wetted and rubbed on the disc. The ...

Re: "ALL GIRLS TOGETHER"

You make me so sad with your picture of girls without pastoral care, Jo. No wonder there was bullying. We were lucky in 4s. Mrs Clarke meant well, but was frightened of 'top management' and didn't really fit: I don't think she was religious, she plucked her eyebrows (which DR told us never to do), s...
