Was it physics? Or could it have been history? Anyway I never had anything to do with her (and I never thought, contrary to apparent popular opinion, that she was the most attractive female teacher - no accounting for taste).

Re: French teacher

Do you remember Jon Curd? Remeber Josh well. We were together in No3 The Avenue during our 7th term. Some of the vocab we learnt then I have never used...moissoneuse batteuse? une applique (a bracket-lamp)? And here's a blast of "la quincaillerie" from the crumbling and torn sheets: une b...

Re: French teacher

I was going through some papers today, and I actually found some old "Louis sheets" of vocab. So here's a sample: un tourne-disques un lampadaire un lit un drap une couverture un oreiller un traversin un buffet la vaisselle une assiette creuse... Nous portons un uniforme bleu foncé: La gr...

Re: STAFF NICKNAMES

Who are the others??? Fiona Fertile = Fiona Barron Grolli = Dr Newsome (could the nickname really have been to do with sheep's balls in Greek as was alleged? and why?) Chez = Mike Williams - bit of a ColA in-joke, I think, and a cue for an anecdote (stop me if you've heard this one) Mike Williams, ...

'Ger' as in gorilla and 'int' as in Pint..." And professionally I have worked with both gorillas and pints - talk about one's name preordaining one's career(s). Funnily enough, he once said the same about you when I asked a couple of years ago! "It's the beards" - as we say when anyo...

Re: The Best Cocktail you ever had and who made it for you

Pimm's - any Summer.

My favourite Cheat's Pimms recipe
1 part Triple Sec
1 part gin
2 parts red vermouth
over ice, top up with lemonade (cloudy) - add a sprig of mint

Now... the worst cocktail, there are some stories there.

Re: Current reading matter

It's obviously time for Leslie Thomas then. A looooong time since I read any Leslie Thomas. I'm currently halfway through a slim tome: The Death of the King's Canary by Dylan Thomas and John Davenport. Although the tome is slim, going is slow as it's a roman à clef and I'm not as up on British poe...

Re: Current reading matter

I'm about to get back into Le Diable de Dartmoor at chapter 11: the mystery appears to be set up on at least three levels and the reader is being nudged (possibly with malice aforethought) to bear The Hound of the Baskervilles in mind. Le Diable de Dartmoor turned out to be ingenious and multi-leve...

Re: Current reading matter

I'm just reading "First among sequels" by Jasper Fforde, and I am absolutely loving it. Is anyone else a fan? Yes, I greatly enjoyed the first 4 Thursday Nexts (but I haven't read First among sequels yet). I didn't go overboard quite so much for The Big Over Easy . To my mind rather more ...

Re: Current reading matter

Yes, La Septième hypothèse was much more satisfying. More twists than a twisty thing, as the saying goes, and Paul Halter's games with the reliability of narrative powered the plot nicely. Recommended.

Re: Current reading matter

I'll have to see whether the twist, when it comes, justifies the comparatively plodding build-up. Well, having finished the La Chambre du fou , I'd characterise it as a rather cool exercise in post-modern pastiche. The post-modernism shook its gory locks at me when after reading most of the book an...

Re: underwear

(Actually pretty well every male wore pyjamas like that in those days. They were probably the most normal part of our kit.) From my and CHAZ's late 70s/early 80s point of view, they were almost as much museum pieces as the breeches. And getting back to underwear, I believe the Morleys factory close...
