Re: Now it reaches Eton

Just to track back a bit regarding the debate about how we perceive people's characters, and with reference to the character witnesses for Karim. Back in Prep B in the 1950s you wouldn't have thought that our housemaster Gordon Pink was anything other than a caring guy. Even his slipperings were ha...

Would your criticism include all school trips? What exactly was this 14 day 'jolly' for...?
As it was to Australia we can safely assume that it was not a cultural exchange.

Re: Aiglon College

Somehow my post this morning disappeared into the yonder ether With the following CV I suggest that people would be "careful" in dealing with Mrs Cairncross Former member of the HMC Inspection Steering Group on the editorial committee of the HMC magazine “Conference & Common Room”. Trustee of Bulke...

He was Fourth Master in my day, behind THK and HFS. Moved up to Third when THK retired. They must have been bewildered having to sit next to Cairncross in Chapel. What a pygmy. Who? It’s worth remembering that THK and Rae were in the senior management team during the period of endemic child abuse. ...

Re: CH Official site: a plethora of pomposity and pedantry

I like free speech, I like a good debate, I like heated debates. I like at times in a debate to provoke. I like the fact that in debating occasionally one gets a ' I had not thought of that' experience. I like the fact that listening to other people increases my knowledge. What I do not like are pe...

There was one senior house (again I don’t recall which) that would loudly vocalise their displeasure in unison at being served the same unimaginative dish, usually the phrase: “Oh no! Not sponge again!”
There was a similar refrain about fruit, in which case it was Pe. A.

Re: Elizabeth Cairncross

An indicative story. Sometime in the mid 80’s rice pudding was served to the school. Almost in unison there was a groan of surprise from the tables. The reason? Salt had been used instead of sugar. It was inedible. For 850 people. No form of tasting or quality control had been done between pantry an...

Re: Elizabeth Cairncross

I have recently heard that some boy squits were deliberately withheld food and had to go begging from girls' tables. I can confirm this. It happened to me as well as at least one other poster on this forum. I lived on milk and toast. I would enter weird dreamlike states every evening before bedtime...

Re: Obituary Old Blue Ted Kenney – and his Fufu test for college applicants

Well, if I was the Dean and learned that one or my tutors was selecting students on the basis of their response to a cat on a chair, I'd have sacked him. It was the treasurers of this period that nearly bankrupted the school. Seeing as we chose to hire cat-loving classicists I find it hard to unders...

285 deg seems about right. In a similar vein, the school is right on the corner of Gatwick controlled airspace - surface to flight-level ridiculous. So for a generation of aviators it’s been a useful marker to avoid terse words from the controller. The Water Tower really does stand out for miles aro...

Was Spam spiced? If it was, Mrs Keeley managed to boil that out of it before it got to the table.

Re: Bishop Ball documentary BBC2 2100 TONIGHT

I was something of a night walker, quite often poking around in the dark hours. There were some fascinating places to explore and security was appalling. If I remember correctly the only places I didn’t get into - over time - were the Wardrobe and Armoury. Everything else I explored on moonlit night...
