Accents at CH Horsham
I do not think this topic has ever been treated in a Forum thread. I was at Housey in the late 40s and 50s, which as we all know was very different from today’s school, although there were probably far more aspects in common to the two eras than vital differences. In my days the teachers were almost...

Another good film screened in Big School was Whisky Galore, based on the novel by Compton Mackenzie.

Re: Should there be a separate sub-forum for the “historic abuse” threads?
Some of the learned attitudes were unnecessarily harsh. We even sat in seniority order for meals - not just clumping year groups together but sitting in age order (and later seniority order based on "black aprons"). A trivial point but indicative of the supremacy of hierarchy in the mind ...

Re: Underachieving at CH
I too am an under achiever, both by CH and my own standards. BUT I have been happily married for over a half century with three successful and happy children who have produced four great grandchildren. My work is respectable and has been mainly satisfying. While far from wealthy now I can do most of...

Re: Loony nonsense at English boarding schools
When at Housey I was lucky enough never to be punished by being “off jam,” although I was beaten twice by my senior housemaster. Rockfreak's piece on Donald Maclean was fascinating (and the lowdown on the Gresham’s School even more so). However I doubt it if Maclean’s school was so direct a cause as...

Re: DAMBUSTERS AND C.H.
Great film, which I had not seen before. Thanks.
Two of the three “interesting young chaps” are William(?) SHREEVES (BaA) at 4 min 17 sec, standing on the right of someone I recognise, but whose name I’ve forgotten and at about 7 min there’s curly haired Martin(?) TWITCHIN (MaA).

Re: Did You Learn to Swear at CH? And Do You Still Eff It Today?
Considering the mention of “Damn,” and in contrast to Tucker’s Law, I recollect one swearer of the 50s (history Grecian and Cambridge scholar) whose favourite expression, usually to juniors, was “Damn your eyesight”.

Re: Visiting the Tower in uniform
I have no idea if such escorted tours of the Tower of London still exist for CH pupils in uniform. My only knowledge of visits in Housey dress to the Tower is that allegedly no entry fee was required. Is this true? Was it ever true? I don’t know, for my home was not in London, so I was never able to...

Re: Less flamboyant CH teachers
It’s a very big task to collect information on so many. I’d be interested to read the results, but rather anecdotes than bare facts. Even so, encouraged by Post War Blue here’s a contribution. Mr Matthews - (I don’t know his first name) Non Oxbridge graduate. Chain smoker with much stained fingers. ...

Re: Does this bring back memories?
I lived in the USA for some years in a middle class residential area. There were two designated days a year called 'Spring Clean-Up' and 'Fall Clean-Up' when anything could be left outside to be picked up by the garbage collectors, who used a large open truck for the purpose. This was especially use...

Re: General Election: Old Blue candidates
It could be much worse. In 1940, after the start of World War 2, Anselm Capell (at CH in the early 1920s, house unknown to me) stood in a LCC election as a member of the British Union of Fascists (and hence supporter of Hitler).

Re: Saluting of Masters
Saluting was not only to greet masters, but also their wives. It continued up to the very early 1950s, when it seemed to die a natural death. In Horsham a favourite way of avoiding the necessity of saluting was to look intently into a shop window, when first noticing the approach of a person who had...

Re: Arthur Rider
I believe Arthur Rider had an excellent French accent (from where?). This was in great contrast to Windy McCracken, an Australian graduate of Melbourne University, who was junior housemaster in Barnes B and taught French and Divinity, to lower forms. His accent was so appalling that even his Lower F...
