Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster
Great photos of Kirby's Lab. The glorious squalor of it! Did I spot in one of them the pressure cooker in which rabbits were stewed?

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster
I like paulv's comments about "Uncle" - he was indeed a father figure to some of us (mid-1950's) at the time I was there. A profound influence in our formative years. I've probably mentioned his name for me, Henscold, a sort of convolute of my surname. Not sure about the identities of the ...

Re: Edward Malins
Gad Malins was a pretty mean pianist: I remember him playing the virtuoso piano part in Constant Lambert's "Rio Grande" We used to satirise his somewhat detached aristocratic manner: when he played Xylophone in something the Orchestra were playing, a neighbour muttered to me "Gad look...

Re: Roy Edwin Terry
Oh yes, Pip Pore. Singing lessons on the platform in the Prep School Hall. singing Welsh traditional songs in (probably appalling) translation. It was only half way through the term that we learned how to pronounce "Cymru". People who couldn't sing he called "Crows". And "UP...

Re: Interview with Roger Allam (PeB, ThA 64-72)
Yes, when asked what first drew him to acting, he replied "I went to this very odd school, Christ's Hospital - like Eton for poor boys."
I've never really thought of it like that.

Re: Roy Edwin Terry
What a splendid trip down Memory Lane this Forum is! I only joined recently but I'm loving it. Yes, marching into Horsham for Cinema showings of films. I remember very clearly Laurence Olivier's Hamlet, in Black & White (the lovely Jean Simmons as Ophelia foating down a river...), also the 1948 ...

Re: Masters' Nicknames
There is another possible origin for Windy Whitfield’s nickname. His predecessor as junior housemaster in Barnes B was Windy McCracken and so unsurprisingly Whitfield inherited the nickname, perhaps because of the alliteration. McCracken had acquired the name after an occasion when he released flat...

Re: Roy Edwin Terry
Ah, Thank you Martin and John Saunders, you've restored my faith to a considerable extent. And of course there was the Rio Grande as well. I sang tenor in that in my last term. Gad Malins played the virtuosic piano part, didn't he. But that would have been in summer 1956. Oh yes, and someone mention...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob
Yes during my time in the signals it changed from "Able Baker Charlie Dog" to "Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta". I still think naturally in Able Baker, in fact I had to look up Delta!

Re: Roy Edwin Terry
Clearly the Pendulum has swung the opposite way, a few years ago they did the Channel 4 reality TV series Rock School at CH http://www.channel4.com/programmes/rock-school/ . Gene Simmons (No I don't know much about him either) taught a class of kids to do Rock. I didn't think much to the musical con...

Re: Roy Edwin Terry
Well this Pop/Jazz ban has shattered some of my fond illusions. I look back on my time at CH as having been spent in a moderately liberal environment. How was it policed? What were the parameters? I mean lots of serious 20th Century music was profoundly influenced by jazz, from Debussy & Ravel o...

Re: Roy Edwin Terry
I'm a bit surprised at the talk of bans of Jazz and Pop: during my time there (48-56), on film nights in Big School they'd play the chart singles of the time. I remember Frankie Lane stuff, and was it Guy Mitchell etc. In Peele A some guys had a wind-up gramophone and they had all sorts of stuff goi...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob
Well perhaps it was only 3 sheets, I can't remember. After all it was nearly 60 years ago. (Probably 1955).

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob
I've come to this Topic a bit late, I see the last contribution was over a year ago. But "Uncle" Kirby: what a man! I suppose my main interaction with him was through the Signals platoon, as someone said a loosely organised bunch of subversives and people who couldn't quite make it as cons...

Re: Roy Edwin Terry
Does anyone remember Roy Terry? He tried to teach me piano and organ. As I remember he limped ,had more hair than would be acceptable in a schoolmaster on Flecker's staff but wore the finest pair of black rimmed spectacles I had seen until the advent of Hank Marvin. However he played a fine swing p...
