Re: The wacky world of catheters
In one of the earlier interviews with Billy Connolly that have been shown on TV recently he recounts that when he was younger he didn't always know what sort of material he could get away with. Then one night he came off stage and was buttonholed by a consultant urologist who asked if he'd ever done...

Re: Bring back proper rugby
I agree about the kicking today Florida Blue. The full backs alternatively kicking down each others throats for territory. But at some point you have to get a turnover. Can any knowledgeable rugger b*gger explain this tactical phenomenon?

The wacky world of catheters
After having developed an enlarged prostate and found myself completely unable to wee one uncomfortable day, I'm now the proud owner of a catheter (at least until I get an op). Perhaps I'm a bit naive but I'd never really clocked out just what was involved. The aforesaid catheter goes against all th...

Re: Bring back proper rugby
Good day for the girls. Our Six Nations rugby team ran in try after try against Italy, while Rachael Blackmore became the first woman (in tandem with her horse) to win the Grand National. It cheered me up as a Republican after having been subjected to pretty much news blitz-out about the Duke of Edi...

Onward Proddy b*stards, marching as to war,
With the cross of Paisley going on before.
Foster our royal mistress leads against the foe,
Forward singing "F*ck the Pope", see our banners go!
Anyone else wanting to contribute more verses is welcome.

Re: Brexit
I read (in some outlets) that Northern Ireland would be better off joining the Republic in order to remain in the EU. This seems unlikely to me. Arlene Foster says that she would rather move to England than become part of Southern Ireland. We haven't responded yet to say whether we'd actually want h...

Re: Flecker’s Banning of some Comics
The whole business of trashy popular culture was nicely covered by GK Chesterton in an essay called "In Defence of Penny Dreadfuls". It appears that scary comics were just as prevalent a hundred years ago as now. Chesterton noted that whenever street scamps were arraigned before a magistra...

David Brown, don't get too carried away with this physical fitness lark vis a vis climbing and mountaineering. In the post war period the big advances in climbing - here and by our climbers in the Alps - were pushed forward almost exclusively by working class lads. Chris Bonington (boarding school a...

Re: Nell Todd painting for sale
She was certainly past the very first flush of youth Katharine when your brother and I were there. Her real name was (if I remember) Nell McClure Schlaunders Todd (or thereabouts) and she hailed from The Grampians. She was that rare breed at the English boarding school, an exotic bohemian. Which is ...

Re: Was Rock 'n' Roll Banned at CH in the Fifties?
It was a new concept partly because, for the first time in our history and particularly in the 1960s, young working class people had a bit of disposable income in their pockets and of course were present in large numbers as a result of the proverbial baby boom after the war. Their tastes and demands...

Re: Meaning of colored walls
People leaving "under a cloud" always reminds me of that exchange in Brideshead where Anthony Blanche is relating to Charles how he left uni under a cloud. "I can't imagine why they call it that," he says. "At the time it seemed like an unwelcome beam of light." But Buc...

Re: Meaning of colored walls
Khal Drogo is right that Col B pupils in the 1950s had to endure under AH Buck. They had to endure his little excursions up to the dorms in the dead of night. I suppose the house was "sporty" under him. It depends what kind of sport you're talking about.
