Re: Did monitors have any real use?
By the time scrub and I were there there was no "swabbing" system, just older boys telling us to make them toast or write their essay or get something from the tuck shop or just taking from our own food supply, "or else...", as scrub said. And the "or else" party was of...

Re: Attorney General's reference
That's unfortunate. Why not? Privacy concerns? I think that the responses of the SMT to questions about why they mismanaged the situation are very much something that should be made public, especially to former students and parents. I can understand why the details of how the abusers abused should b...

Re: Attorney General's reference
Is this where we will eventually be able to obtain court transcripts from? I am very interested in getting more detail on the SMT's responses to various questions, beyond what was quoted in the newspapers.

Re: Letter to the Head Master
It would certainly be useful to have the names though. It would be illuminating to track the careers of all these abusers across the network of boarding schools in the UK - where they worked before CH, where they were moved on to - I wonder if there are any particular feeder schools and dumping grou...

Re: Letter to the Head Master
Thinks for writing this. Can we ask the school (in this letter or separately) to provide the names of any deceased employees against whom there have been multiple credible accusations? If they accept it shows they are making a good faith effort to shed light on past abuses, if they refuse, well, the...

Re: Will Dobbie be defrocked?
Why don't they do traditional excommunications like the Catholics? You can't remove a doctor's knowledge of disease and physiology but a priest or bishop is merely a title and job description. About the only time I've ever wished the Inquisition was still around... but no doubt they'd be staffed by ...

Re: Did monitors have any real use?
I think the hierarchy and monitor system was overall a good thing, with the main aspect being the aspiration to achieve and gain a position of authority, and the recognition of achievement which being a school/house monitor provided. I think it probably formed the foundations of wanting to progress...

Re: Explanation of the 'Tube'
I tried to find the Big School entrance when I visited in 2014... either I couldn't remember exactly where it was or it had been shut off.
Never did the infirmary tunnel, but I think I know where the entrance was.

Re: Explanation of the 'Tube'
I hope intrepid pupils are able to bypass whatever heightened security measures are in place and explore the tube. I was a lurker beneath, it was one of my favorite sanctuaries along with walks in Shelley's wood. Finding the Little Side tunnel and getting all the way from my house to emerge out of t...

Re: Did monitors have any real use?
House monitors seemed to have some limited uses: supervising prep time, waking people up and goading them to go to bed. What on earth did school monitors do though? Aside from wear velvet cuffs and sit on the dais to have perpetual last suppers with Poulton (which sounds quite annoying to endure)

Re: Did monitors have any real use?
Hah, a pathetic and pointless privilege indeed, the "Grecians' path"... I used to feel very slightly subversive walking along it.

Re: Which prison?
Supposedly "nonce" stands for "Not On Normal Community Exercise" (i.e. secluded from the regular crims) - but who knows if that's really true. Dictionaries say it's unknown. Several origins have been proposed; possibly derived from dialectal nonce, nonse (“stupid, worthless indiv...

Even though I disagree with the decisions occasionally I would like to thank the moderators for maintaining a forum where open and honest discussion happens much more often than on Facebook.
