Re: Corporal Punishment......

I frequently received the slipper in private by a certain teacher i was made to put my legs on to the armchair rests and kneel then push forward and grab hold of the back of a wooden chair then i was made to be completely bare from waist down the slipper was administered to my bare bottom normally ...

Re: Why does Eton make headlines....?

I wonder how the majority of Eton boys will treat their “charity-kids”?? I recall how other independent schools used to call us The Paupers, but how the local state schools used to call as the posh toffs. One of the great things about CH was that none of us knew (at least in the first year or so) w...

Re: Roger Martin - trial

Did the question of lack of control crop up at any other times in your career beyond the rugby match incident? "Vilified" isn't on trial here you know, I think this barrack-room lawyering has the potential to drive away a source of interesting historical perspective who voluntarily signed...

Ah, yes, of course, that'll be why they got THK to do it too!

Probably just a coincidence; after all, Richard McCall is a pretty common name, especially in Bangkok.

Re: Here's a hypothetical

Another one, here's a blog written by a guy who likes to go on holiday by himself in Pattaya and happens to have an old friend named Richard McCall! https://petestravels.wordpress.com/2017 ... ard-bound/

Re: Roger Martin - trial

I think there are quite a few reminiscences from this era that haven't seen the light of day on the forum. I had certainly heard about "skinny dipping", but this was from the older boys, which makes me think it had ceased before my arrival. I don't remember it being described as anything s...

Re: Here's a hypothetical

There's a "physics professor" McCall mentioned in this blog post: https://www.stickmanbangkok.com/readers-submissions/2013/02/thai-thoughts-and-anecdotes-part-367/. Content warning: website is about the joys of "whoremongering" in Bangkok and almost certainly contains "adult...

Re: Roger Martin - trial

My recollection is that RM was a well-regarded guy, but probably not a great educator as he always seemed to have the bottom sets. He did have a few habits - the house swimming thing, the cine camera thing - that might have been regarded as merely eccentric by the standards of the day, or at least b...

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

Am I right in thinking that having pleaded not guilty and gone to trial, there's now no incentive for him to "dob in" the other single male housemasters in exchange for a reduced sentence?

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

I remember these invitations, and the cycling-shorts bit... I never made the guest-list, though I was aware of its existence. The cycling shorts ring no bells whatsoever - who even had cycling shorts at CH circa 1988; I'm sure they weren't on the approved kit list! Were they one of those weird CH-s...

I do however, don't think we have heard the end of Dobbie, and possibly others.
Yes, I hope we get to hear from the "other single male house masters" mentioned in the media before too long.

Re: Who Knew What?

I'm of similar vintage, I think the mid 1990s might mark the end of the "good old days"; decreasing public enthusiasm for Victorian virtues - as well as the increasing number of paying customers at CH after that date - might have led to a greater degree of scrutiny.

Re: Ernest McCall- Maths teacher / housemaster Maine A

Was Robinson a woodwork/metalwork teacher who joined in the mid 80s? Yes, widely regarded as being thick as two short planks due to both the subject he taught and his northern origins. With hindsight, he was probably a pretty reasonable chap. Mrs Robinson (maiden name forgotten) was the Home Econom...
