The only comic permitted in Peele A was The Eagle, which was allowed because it had been produced (by an Anglican vicar) to specifically counter the 'pernicious' influence of the imports from the US.
And a very fine read it was... "Dan Dare Pilot Of The Future".

Re: Was Rock 'n' Roll Banned at CH in the Fifties?
Peele A in the 1950s never had Radio Luxembourg on the house radio, and there was virtually no other broadcaster of post-56 Elvis/Chuck Berry style music to listen to When the BBC started broadcasting in FM in the later part of the 50s I helped the housemaster select a suitable new house radio to re...

Re: Prince Charles, Bernard Levin and Shakespeare
"Does anyone know why?" I came after Levin's time, but I was slightly junior to one of the actors who went on to be in the cast of Levin's 'Oh Calcutta' (and Hair). In our day CH (pre 1960ish) the ethos espoused by the school and its active alumni was very very distanced from the fringe a...

"Florida Blue » I remember what we referred to as a concrete "Pill Box", much as described by LongGone, in the woods overlooking the Arun from the west side about a mile or so from the station." I remember that one, as I used to pass it frequently in the late 50s on my way to li...

"Another single example of a special big, very heavy set, normally used in a tank, was also available." That was a 22 set, which came with a full power supply and a Class D wavemeter to tune it accurately. With a calculated full wave aerial hung up in the lime trees outside Uncle's classr...

Re: The school glider
As I remember (hazily) the one in the late 1950s was in effect a horizontal bungee jump – merely a training aid designed to give at most a few seconds of 'flying' experience a few inches off the ground. The bungee was stretched by a sort of rugby scrum then a restraining mechanism was released. I do...

"Remember we were not allowed outside the ring fence except to go to the gym and pool or with an authorised adult. I know some people used to fish in the farm pool as well...." I don't remember any of that ;-) Peele A must have existed in an alternate universe. Every time we were allowed ...

Quote from Guardian article: "He did not enjoy boarding but thrived academically..." With him a Grecian and me as a squit, I remember his face displaying a supercilious disdain for the whole process of the school's regime treating everyone essentially like an 11 year-old in every field apa...

Re: Cross-country runs
Peele A had 'triangles' (around the road triangle near the railway bridge), and 'level crossings' to the crossing by Eastlands Copse (where the old railway branched off). And weekly mandatory house runs round/through Shelley's Wood and back over Sharperhurst hill then to the aforementioned level cro...

the small car that was manhandled during break in the 1/4 mile and wedged between 2 trees... I seem to remember that was an Austin 7 (the pre-war variant) belonging to to a junior master (maybe music?) and the man-handling was done, very easily, by Beaky Davies and a fellow Harlequin rugby player. ...

Todays' BBC West news bulletin contained a report of the IICSA's ongoing residential schools investigation into Wells Cathedral School - where, but for her retirement last year, Cairncross would have been the one interviewed about the 2007 conviction for pupil-abuse at the school by a staff member. ...

Re: CH Letter re support for abuse survivors
Bullying was institutionalised and endemic during my time at CH for sure, between 1985 and 1992. In-house hierarchies gave kids power over each other - and some abused it, to a greater or lesser extent. ...bullying has now moved online and can be just as nasty, if not worse, than the CH I remember....

The CCF in 1959 (I think) had a week long summer camp, based at the army camp at Shorncliffe near Folkstone. The objective of the exercise was for the whole CCF to route march to Canterbury, capture the Red Dean's underpants and march and back - over four days.... As far as I remember it was the off...

CH Medical Officer Trevor Hoskins, writing in June 1978, had this to says: In a decade since student unrest reached its height, and those of us working in schools saw its effect on schoolchildren, with an unprecedented questioning of authority and the entire basis of the educational system. Opting o...
