Re: CH food

deep-frying isn't enough, Mary - it needs the added taste from the sausage or bacon fat .... I have never had marmalade on fried bread since I left CH, but I can still taste it ...

Re: CH food

I remember the "fish" fingers - the only near-palatable way to eat them was smothered in brown sauce...

Re: Bad things you didnt get caught doing (Sausage in Communion)

Ah, the joys of misbehaving - I remember fondly a LIV prep when someone twanged their ruler in the side of the desk ( we were doing maths prep) and the teacher taking prep ( not sure who it was) confiscated said ruler - immediately the whole class followed suit, all rulers confiscated - no prep done...

Re: Hertford Memories - The Book

Oh my goodness, reading all this really does bring it back - I can even taste again that horrible pink fish sauce - and the strange Sunday morning coffee! I also was addicted to fried bread with marmalade - and have never been able to reproduce the taste of the CH variety - to my family's relief, I ...

Re: Housemistresses

Still??? the mind boggles... I remember my mother's face when she wanted to buy a pubescent daughter a sorely -needed deodorant and was told that I was not allowed to use it ( someone, probably SWMNBN, decided this might damage the clothes..) - and those dress shields still ponged even after washing...

Re: Housemistresses

Coatfrocks must have been phased out in '63/64 because I know that I wore one in 5s ( remember the dress-shields inside them, that we had to unpick, wash and re-sew into them ?) - and I agree, they were much smarter than those horrible grey dresses, which gave even the thinnest girls battle-ship hip...

Re: Leonard Cohen

I've watched the concert 3 times so far - Leonard Cohen is the soundtrack to my teens, " Susanne" in particular, and I played " Songs from a room" so often that my mother finally confiscated it... wonderful man, and his delight at the audience's reaction was touching.

Re: Will never buy bread again.....

Call the customer care line, give them the order number, explain that you forgot to key in the reduction coupon code and ask them to apply it to your order - they should be happy to do it for you - if not, cancell order and rebook with the code.

Re: "They were sweet and meant well"

I did German with Nutto, before I had to give it up because it clashed with one of my O-levels - she was indeed a very sweet lady, good teacher and very involved with her subject - she not only taught the language but culture and customs as well - and to this day I am still complimented on my Heidel...

Re: What Sounds & Smells Instantly Transport You Back to CH?

On the original subject of thread - in the summer, if I add grated cheese to a salad and then add hot mustard to my mayonnaise - I'm right back in 2s dayroom at tea-time !
