Re: Sheila and Peter Higgins - character references for Gary Dobbie

Great, well I'd love to see some concrete evidence of that. We need more than just assurances, the school has committed gross errors. Poulton, Cairncross and Sillett should pay a price for letting this happen. If there's even one case of abuse discovered in more recent years the school should be cl...

Re: Sheila and Peter Higgins - character references for Gary Dobbie

I just don't feel all that confident that boarding schools and CH in particular have changed sufficiently to prevent this stuff from going on. I feel that in the 90s when I was there people would have said the same thing, "we have the children's act and enlightened attitudes now". Might be harder t...

Re: Here's a hypothetical

McCall's name keeps coming up. He appears to have either died or gone abroad. One can't help thinking he will be happy to be as elusive as Lord Lucan. True. His name has cropped up, and he did leave abruptly. But i'd prefer to err on the side of caution if noone has come forward to press charges fo...

Re: Sheila and Peter Higgins - character references for Gary Dobbie

Lesson from all this? Keep your children close. Don't send them away to be brought up by strangers on account of some social prestige that you think it will give you. Or them. OK, I know it happens at Catholic day schools, but that is because some Catholics are dumb enough to believe that the local...

Re: Here's a hypothetical

Ashley I’m so sorry this happened to you, so sorry and so angry. I believe that there are many more victims of what happened than we are aware of, whether they were direct victims of abuse or indirect victims of the toxic environment around them. You mention suicides of OBs and it’s something that ...

Re: Dobbie sentencing hearing

I'm with you guys. As far as existing/ex staff on this site are concerned, one can only wonder if a form of 'gagging-order' was/has been imposed by the school. We have all seen the 'apologistic staff' comments on here in the past. That speaks volumes. I expect that most staff feel guilty for not re...

Re: Here's a hypothetical

McCall was a very good maths teacher, and I liked him. No idea he ran his house in that way, but it sounds like he would be wise not to show his face anywhere, if he's still with us, of course. One group of other people, who don't qualify as victims, but nevertheless suffer from the crimes of Dobbi...

Re: Dobbie sentencing hearing

I bet there’s a fair few teachers who would really love (and probably benefit from) unloading some home truths about what went on and the behaviour of the SMT at the time. As awful as this whole episode is, I think about how many great people there were at CH, who went above and beyond their positi...

It didn't. It went up.

2004 saw the implementation of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and the offence of indecent assault was abolished and and replaced by sexual assault.
Ok. I see. So is there any possible reason why the judge would have interpreted things otherwise...?

Re: Dobbie sentencing hearing

I have had a bit of an update on this. The judge seems to have worked on the basis that the maximum sentence for the indecent assaults was 2 years imprisonment. If the information that I have been given is correct, the judge was wrong about that. It was 10 years imprisonment for offences on males c...

Suffice to say, Sir Eyre Coote MP was caricatured by Cruikshank for paying older boys in the Mathematical School for a session of mutual flagellation in 1815; and being caught by the school nurse. https://images....
