Re: Elizabeth Cairncross

A lot of what was allowed to go on and tolerated is hard to believe, particularly for the older generations who weren't there post merger. But here is one such case, documented in the Daily Mail. Old rituals, but taken to new extremes in the laissez faire period of the 80s and 90s when things had j...

Why not? It's an anecdote. I remember in my time someone covered up the Grace with a note saying It's not your lucky day. The Grecian in question calmly took out a diary and read it.
I'll rephrase myself. Why was someone saying grace in place of the person in the pulpit?

Re: GRACE

Comments on the Horsham Grace have to include mention of the occasion, during my time at CH, when the Grecian saying Grace (as usual speaking from the pulpit about 6 feet above the rest of us) simply mouthed it, while the Grace was said by another person on the floor below him. It was not detected,...

Re: How was it for you? (CH, not sex)

Interesting points. Just curious about this one... Simple example: my training from birth was that staff in the house are never seen by the family. I had a very minor role which was referred to, all backstage, in the house play.. Nothing on stage whatsoever but Kit forced me despite my objections t...

Loringa mentions being taught to hill climb in the Lake District. Does one need to learn this at school?
No. Not if you live near hills in the Lake District or other picturesque hilly areas...

On top of that the school deliberately put me into positions specifically against my will that I hated . Interesting points. Just curious about this one... Re: prison releases

PEDs according to my calculations: These assume release at half way point if no prison infractions and then under supervision for the remainder of the sentence. Burr is different as he is serving an "extended" sentence because he is still considered a danger to children. Two thirds. Just curious as...

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)

I do agree with Scrub that CH has perhaps got locked into an unwinnable race with the posh schools. I would like to think that all schools could have a shot at the non-core subjects (if only in order to enrich their lives) but Michael Gradgrind Gove and his successors have decreed that the state sc...

Re: Bishop Ball documentary BBC2 2100 TONIGHT

I suppose that in any industry a freemasonry develops in which people are unwilling to rat on a colleague with whom they may have become friends. The problems of trying to prove what they think they've seen or heard. Oi! headmaster! I believe that Mr Jones is spending suspiciously long hanging arou...

Re: Bishop Ball documentary BBC2 2100 TONIGHT

I know of only one case where somebody actually had a backbone and it wasn't a teacher. R F Salisbury, the Clerk of Christ's Hospital, was so outraged when he heard a teacher had been moved on, that he went over the heads of the Headmaster and Council of Almoners and reported that person to the Dep...

Re: Coronavirus: David Norgrove gives 'em both barrels

it was deemed an offence that the night before I had broken a few toes and had my foot in plaster so I couldn't wear formal black shoes. The other one I remember was even more stupid; one evening, outside the bank , I was talking Spanish to someone but other staff members nearby could not understan...

Re: What is CH for these days?

Foureyes invites a debate as to why the international megarich would want to send their children to this country what with Coronavirus, etc. I would submit that the answer is heritage and tradition. The universality of the English language, our well-publicised but now defunct empire, our traditions...
