Re: My G, you went to school on another planet

I'm an old f**** listening in on this series of memory lane nostalgia that I find really baffling. I go back so far that one only went to one House for one's school career. Everything was "common" - individual studies only for the House Captain and his Deputy. Grecians' privileges (apart ...

I remember on my 3rd form I think that Maine B was being used as an overflow cos of the flu epidemic.... They sent us all home when over half the staff were in bed... Lucky ones  Somewhere I have a photo of Col A at lunch parade during the great Asian Flu Pandemic. AFAIR there were 3 on parade...

Richard Ruck: Ashton's background. Taken to email; I don't want to cause a racism storm Rex. A puzzle here. The master I knew of taught Greek and Latin and his pupils used to talk about his habit of using the ideosyncracies (sp?) of individual Roman/Greek writers in his crosswords. Being pretty pre...

Masses of answers: Yes, 9 years Great Plum. Prep A from age 9 to 11 and then Col A. Apart from moving up from Prep we didn't change houses. However there was a competitive intake at age 11 for those who could pay but de facto there was never to my knowledge any consideration or comment about parents...

Mr Kirby. Old Blue and science teacher (well, that was the theory). In fact very good at teaching about life in general though blackboard chalks would fly with near monotonous regularity. Bred bees; the rumour was that he bred a strain that wouldn't sting and that they died out as a result. Lots abo...

Don't think I would have done too much different (apart from making better efforts not to get caught for crimes). There is one barsteward (he calls himself a university professor) in NZ who, as a monitor put me in the Sicker for a couple of days with facial "problems". I should have got ev...

Simon Kerruish at 47? a mere babe in arms  As for drink I did quite a trade in making and selling Ginger Beer in Col A- the only way I could get pocket money for the tuck shop. Someone used to make a foul concoction involving rasberries and shoe polish!!!! Cases in the Tube; yes - each house h...

Beds? Horsehair - I suppose so but it felt like coarse wire wool. the mattresses were supposed to lie on wooden boards of which there was a shortage - and even greater shortage if one got broken - or, more commonly half-hitched. Therefore one couldn't afford to get too overweight! wake up - 6.55 bel...

Corporal punishment was relatively common in my day (Col A 1952-61) though only masters could use it. It was a simple fact of life like gristle rather than meat in the stews under post war food restrictions (Miles and P.O. Paths were the punishments given and enforced by monitors). Yes, I got my sha...
