Re: Boarding School Syndrome

I don’t think I had been to Hertford before I started there. We lived in the same county, but with no car .... it was a long way away. It had been a very bad year for the family, my father had been very ill in the spring, a completely unknown reaction to a particular drug resulted in his being confi...

Re: Boarding School Syndrome

I think a lot may depend on how the parents prepare the child for boarding school. My OB father wanted us all to go to CH, so we were brought up knowing it was a possibility. My brother started in Prep A when I was about 5, it was 6 or 7 years later I went to CH. Yes of course it was difficult at ti...

Re: Politics

I'm not getting involved too far ! As an 'Old Codger' from way back, I have always voted against, ( Brexit ). I have both personal and political reasons. Sorry JR - does this mean you voted against Brexit, ie remain? Your reply to Mid A 15's post indicates the opposite. Thanks I was confused at fir...

Re: Politics

I wish I knew the answer to your question! Our family is firmly remain, hence the new Irish passports!

It is very difficult to get any Leavers to answer how the EU cramped their freedoms, their choice always seems very nebulous based on freedom and sovereignty.

Please tell us more.

Re: Politics

Andrew, I’ll be using my new Irish passport for the first time later this month. My sons are in the same position as you, they have an Irish born grandparent, but can’t pass the citizenship on to their children, as it never occurred to me it might be necessary to register my sons. The only comment a...

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

Yes, I heard that today, the fourth is Jack Singleton. See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-50240391 I think Jack may have had much the same experience of the World Cup as our CH Joe. The school has changed since we were there, it is bigger now and just 11-18, whereas it had its own Lower Schoo...

Re: Politics

Yes, I wonder just how many doctoral theses will be written about the whole shenanigans! In a way I'm luckier than you scrub as I've retired, but I have sons in their 40s and grandchildren to worry about. I imagine that one son and his children may have Scottish nationality before long, something I'...

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

Thanks for the correction, I was thinking Ford but my fingers weren't! I learnt about it when the MP for Harpenden was on some political programme and was congratulated for "Harpenden's win in the World Cup" , he explained the comment before going on to talk about other things. St George's won the f...

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

I learnt yesterday that no less than three of the England side, Farrell, Wood & Itoje, I think, went to the school I was at before CH, St George’s Harpenden, my father was school chaplain. I wonder whether this is the most in an England team from the same school, no brothers. Does anyone know? Many ...

CHOBA Carol Concert

Don’t know if this comment should be on the Politics Thread.

It seemed somewhat ironic to get an official invitation to the Carol Concert on Thursday 12 December today. I wonder what else we might be doing that day?

Re: History in the fifties?

As a very new British Council wife, the first buffet dinner I hosted was for the cast of a touring production of A Man for All Seasons. This was in Ghana, 1970. I was teaching at Wesley Girls’ High School and some of the students went to see the play. I remember one getting very indignant with me sa...
