My condolences to you, and all who knew and loved your brother.

Thank you for that, not that I knew either of the OBs, but my grandfather, also a cleric, retired to the same place, College of St Barnabas, Lingfield. it was good to learn it is still going, as my grandfather died in the 60s

Re: Brexit

Thank you, Otter, very interesting. I see my son could claim Pakistani citizenship, I don’t think he has any plans to do so!

Re: Dorm Raids

My mind boggles at the very thought! I presume the boarding houses were locked at night, but I can’t honestly remember.

CHOBA Webinars

Did anyone else sign up for any of the CHOBA webinars? I've enjoyed two of them, Bletchley Park and today on the Welchman-Turing Bombe, used to decode Enigma messages. I learnt a lot and may well sign up again if something catches my eye.

Re: Twelve Camels For Your Wife

At the time I was in the far north of the country, close to the border with Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso. The tribes there were vey fragmented and definitely not Akan.

As to tribal markings, I used to be able to recognise the local ones, they varied a lot in number and depth of cut.

Re: Twelve Camels For Your Wife

Welcome George. I left Hertford in 1965, in 69 I went to Northern Ghana as a VSO, but I don’t think I can have been as beautiful as the wife in your book title! A chief only offered Four Cows and Seven Goats for me. He had 16 wives and 42 children already, but I’d have become number one wife, or so ...

Re: Nell Todd painting for sale

For some reason I’d always imagined her as a much younger woman when she went to Horsham. I remember my brother talking about her. She is possibly the only one of his teachers whose name and subject I remember!

I agree with you David. In the Book I quoted only one former monastery was quoted and that wasn’t for a school.

Re: Old and New London by Walter Thornbury

While temporarily distracted from work (I have no idea how that happened...), I came across Old and New London vol. 2, by Walter Thornbury (Originally published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London, 1878). Chapter XLVI is devoted, in considerable detail, to CH. I'm sure it's known to many of you...

Re: Old and New London by Walter Thornbury

Thanks for bringing it to our attention. That bit about our founder goes against everything we were ever told. I wonder whether there is any corroboration of the statement?

I’ll check whether it’s referenced in the 1953 book, I have my father’s copy.

Re: A Glimmer of Hope!

A glimmer of hope perhaps but I note the ongoing lack of engagement on this forum from the Brexit enthusiasts. I think that it is fair to say that little or nothing that is currently occurring is unexpected so where are you with your defence of Brexit? Come on - Brexiteers, you voted for this shamb...

Re: The Great Benefits of Brexit!

Now, let's please have some comments from the Brexiteers of whom there are (were?) a number on this forum. I'd like to know what I have missed and why, in reality, leaving is a good thing, thank you! I would love to know why it is supposed to be a good thing - so far I have seen nothing whatever to...

Re: Britt or European

How one identifies nationally is an interesting question. I consider myself to be British even though I also hold Irish nationality. That’s true for me too, my mother was definitely Irish all her life, having gone to England to train as a nurse in the 30s. She did hold a British passport, I don’t t...
