Re: Richard Slater

Hands up, I didn't realise my cover had been blown. Damn! The 20th anniversary of Richard's suicide was in March. I found it very hard this year, more than other years. 20 years seems such a long time and although the shock has diminished, the sadness is at times still palpable. Suicide has a horrib...

Re: Will never buy bread again.....

The Romans used spelt flour to make bread. Very good for you. My mother loves it and makes her own half and half (ie with some strong white bread flour) but Morrisons also do a bakery loaf with it. As for food issues/addictions, I have been spending the best part of 30 years trying to come to terms ...

Re: Current reading matter

Have just started Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol. OK so far, easy reading, quick pace, lots of twisty turny things. Not going to set the world on fire, but there are worse ways to spend one's time.

Re: THE LONG, LONG REACH OF C.H.

I got married at Kelly College chapel outside Tavistock as my father-in-law was a classics teacher there.   Twilight zone! Ain't life funny. The chap I was talking to was 3rd Master at Kelly, recently retired (Christopher Kirwin sp?). He is organising the Tavistock Music and A...

Re: Hertford Memories - The Book

Oh dear! I began putting stuff together. Now I realise that my thoughts/compilation would greatly upset Kerren and her like-minded friends - I know from so many reminiscences that CH Hertford is a greatly complicated subject on which to write... I would be bound to put things differently for those ...

Re: THE LONG, LONG REACH OF C.H.

Can't get away from the place. I met a man today in Tavistock whose best man at this wedding had been a teacher at CH. Must ask him next time I see him who it was and see if anyone on the forum knew him.

Re: Bokkers Today

In the 90's, getting a cup of tea for a senior boy was called bokkering . We use it in the family as a term for doing household/menial jobs (mostly my domain). Also 'sticking and licking' (a Hertford term) for mass clearing up sessions before Christmas, holidays, spring cleaning etc. and 'klepping'...

Re: Are we alone?

I believe (and I am quite happy to be proved wrong!) that a rather small number of Old Blues actually contribute to the school. I remember hearing a percentage that was lower than 10%. That REALLY surprises me! I thought the percentage would have been much, much higher than that! I have already ins...

Any reports? Who was there? What did you all do? Our 20 year reunion is coming up in June and I'm debating whether to make the trek over.

Re: Quick questions and (maybe) answers Hertford Memories th

I liked letter writing. I found it a sort of escapism to put pen to paper and often wrote several pages to my parents, about what, goodness knows ! Probably everyday mundane things such as what we'd had for lunch and snippets of information about school work. I never wrote about anything BAD, just ...

Were we allowed to go out at weekends when it wasn't a leave day?

Re: Day Pupils.

I have to wonder if the 'Powers-That-Be' have REALLY thought this one through ! I guess the proof will be in the pudding! The Governors might have decided to make a number of full fee day places available, but they've yet to find families who are willing to fill them. What is the competition like f...
