Trouble is folks, I think I would get all tongue tied were I to meet him now. He gave me a love of Shakespeare that lives to this day and he became a kind of idol to me.

I remember back in 1976 a group of us spent 6 weeks planning a visit to Hertford to see how the other half lived but the scheme was discovered when one of us was just stupid enough to ask a master for directions. We all got double detentions, made to write essays on the evils of being horny and give...

You lucky girls! You got to wear your own underwear? I will never forget the revulsion I felt the first time I had to wear CH issue skiddies..................The thought of what might have happened in them before I got them... well I won't labour the point. I remember the joy I felt at conning the d...

Did the girls ever get beatings at Hertford?
I got the almost obligatory cane (on several occasions) but the one teacher I was terrified of was Mr Plumley and his exceedingly painful expertise with a gym shoe!

Jude, perhaps you have a point about men being strange. I can clearly remember the house coming to a stop when certain master's daughters walked past!
You would never believe the speculation that followed when I was seen walking arm in arm with one of the Head Master's daughters.

Mark Sutcliffe, now thats a name I haven't heard for years. We started at CH in the 3rd form together. He was great at getting in trouble. Didn't he get expelled in the end? I had phalik Matthews too, oh those cigarettes and the bunsen burner. I will never forget the day he nearly blew the lab up by...

I don't remember doing anything really crazy other than smashing ****** around the head with a cricket bat becused he had really annoyed me. It was a true testament to being a hardy Yorkshireman that he survived said attack. He even bought me a half pint in the Grecian's club that night. I do rememb...

Oh help, just seeing that name in print gives me shivers. Moniseur Bardou. He and I never got on with the result that I miserably failed my "O" level.
Mr Farrar now there was a great French teacher, I had so much fun translating the Asterix cartoons with him!

House numbers

Maine B 7
Middleton B 32 (I was really embarrassed about this because Chris Burns' brother had been Mid B 32 and he was hoping for it. I offered to swap with him to become Mid B 6 but he said it wouldn't be worth the earache we would get from Miss Gracie)

Who would I apologise to?

Hmmm how long have we got? Let's start with My housemaster in Mid B Rev. I. Atkinson. Dear God but I gave him a hard time, I was always in trouble and he was either trying to get me out of it or give me the punishment for it. Ubi once had to cain Julian Angel and myself for throwing stones outside t...

Well I can just echo everyone's sentiments about RM. The man was a genius at turning hopeless cases into passable candidates. I was expected to get F in both language and literature, I got him for a year and passed both!
How do you thank a man for that?

First days at school

When I was there, there was only public phone booths one of which was by the tuck shop. You could always spot the new boys by the blubbing when it was their turn to use the phone. Sometimes the queues went past the squash courts. I remember my clearest thought on my first day was, "what the hel...
