Re: Politics

Will Jezza go down with his ship AND his red flag ?? One can only hope. No more or less than the Maybot will go down with her ship and her blue flag. Brexit aside, which party is more likely to deal with homelessness, food banks, inequality, sky-high rents, a dysfunctional social security system an...

Re: How will CH cope with Brexit?

Firstly, no big country goes into another for any length of time for the good of the indigenous population. There is always something they want. Oil, gold, minerals or to keep a trade route open. This is the raison d'etre behind Afghanistan and Iraq. You talk about refugees flowing hither and thithe...

Re: How will CH cope with Brexit?

It's an interesting point Katharine to ask why we Brits were in these places to begin with. The Gold Coast (Ghana) might be a giveaway. It's so often because these countries are rich in minerals that the big powers take an interest in them. If we were doing such a great job why did resistance or ind...

Re: How will CH cope with Brexit?

Brexit is a worry for all (except JR) but on a huge scale for CH ... I dunno, CH will probably do what any organisation in their position has always done, either avoid or soften any negative impacts by having enough money to ride out any discomfort, or having low friends in high places operating on...

Re: Politics

He's done it again. After a hiatus in which my letters didn't go in, The Grauniad has included mine among several letters arguing with the Economics Editor Larry Elliott that we're better in the EU than out, notwithstanding misgivings about the role of the 28 states in an increasingly globalised wor...

Re: How will CH cope with Brexit?

Michael Scuffil mentions Empire Day when we were at CH. Doesn't this sound like a long time ago? And yet in his and my lifetime. Empire? When we ran large parts of the globe and no-one (except the subjugated peoples - let's call them the Empirees) questioned our right. In about 1954 I was in the Pre...

Re: How will CH cope with Brexit?

I imagine that Banker Brown is already considering taking a short position on the pound in anticipation of its Icarus-like descent if we leave. Will he be as successful as George Soros and his friends in 1992?

How will CH cope with Brexit?

Brexit is a worry for all (except JR) but on a huge scale for CH. How will they recruit Spanish masters? And what about the food? Years ago when I was there the skiffage pie would have been produced organically and healthily in the fields of West Sussex, but what now? Well OK I hope they've moved on...

Re: Adverts...please not this

My rule of thumb is don't click on any ads, or indeed anything you don't actually, vitally, chronically need. On any site. Anywhere. Otherwise your email box will be deluged with Filipino women, Russian brides, penis enlargement, double glazing, Bitcoin, more Russian brides, more penis enlargement, ...

Re: Michael Cherniavsky

Isn't it a strange thing Michael, now that I sit back and consider my posts, that I've inserted an "erm" whenever I've mentioned the word Intellectual? Is it only Britain and America that have this hang-up about Intellectuals? Dangerous pointy-heads who are too clever for their own good? Does any ot...

Re: Politics

I'm clearly not the only person with my particular views. In this week's Guardian there has been a debate about the broadening of assisted places in the independent sector (I do love that clever Orwellian title: they mean the private sector). Mr Phil Jones from Ashford posts: "Julie Robinson of the ...

Re: Michael Cherniavsky

Browsing this site and remembering the posts from and about Geoffrey Cannon relating to The Listener and the Radio Times, is there an equivalent of The Listener these days? A more, erm, intellectual version of the Radio Times? I used to enjoy The Listener way back then. It was unashamed to be, erm, ...

Re: Politics

Replying to Scrub,I'm afraid I didn't put my point very well. I should have said that Britain and America were two of the most unequal countries in the DEVELOPED world (that is a fact according to the OECD). I think we can all see that great disparities of wealth exist in the developing world (or th...

Re: Politics

Totally wasted. No other country seems to need them. What's special about them? Actually, quite common in the US. Unlike the UK they make sure to stay out of the limelight as far as possible. It's an interesting point though Mike, that the US and the UK are two of the nominally richest countries in...
