Re: Elizabeth Cairncross

Bullying and anti social behaviour seems to have got worse during the 70s, 80s and 90s on an upward chronological trajectory. We are talking about the modern era by the way, not Oliver Twist. How was sexual abuse allowed to happen? Was it because in some houses social norms had completely broken dow...

Re: The silence of Elizabeth Cairncross

I am led to beleive that whilst principal at Wells Cathderal School subsequently, she was in the habit of sending children who had homesickness or other vunerabilities to stay for a little while with the late Peter Ball, sometime Bishop of Gloucester who was subsequently jailed for a string of pred...

Re: RIP Tom Jeffers 1944-2020

Very sad. Tom and Jackie were ahead of their time - a very friendly and approachable couple and whilst Tom was the Housemaster, Jackie played a full part in the life of PeA. Sunday evening playing cards in their kitchen made a nice change to the normal housey routines. I think PeA was probably the f...

Re: WATER TOWER

An interesting ‘aside’ from the underlying topic: Quite coincidentally, the CH Water Tower and its height were fresh in my mind yesterday when I answered the original post. My wife’s family in UK has ancestral links to a small town in central Germany and just the day before yesterday we unearthed a...

Re: Aiglon College

Hardly links. More like random events. How many schools have had 2 previous CH members of staff teach there? The list would be endless. So the random events are: 1. McDonald is an Old Blue: 72-78 2. McDonald was a CH Housemaster:91 - 94 3. Cairncross was Deputy Head of CH from 1986 -2000 4..McDonal...

"Retiring" before he is booted out of the best club in the country. He was however effective when it came to dealing with financial Impropriety. As Chief Whip, he was unequivocal that Thorpe should stand down when it came to light that he had been soliciting party funding to pay off his ex lover. Bu...

Re: Cross-country runs

These days, the don’t run it outside the ring fence so I assume they must just run around big side or something... Any idea why? Probably don't want to mess up the carpet in that nice travel lodge accomodation they seem to have now. If you were in Leig Hunt then you had the length of the Back Av to...

Re: prison releases

I don't think prisoners should be tagged, they should serve their time. It's not a punishment And if the prisons are too full, then sentence them to less time. But let's not pretend that justice is served or we are being tough on crime by tagging them. I understand it provides flexibility, incentiv...
