Re: How Different Was Your Home Life From Your CH Life?

I came from a large council estate in London, where my head teacher told me I should go to Christ's Hospital because then my Mum wouldn't have to struggle financially with raising me. I went, and my accent was constantly made fun of until I adapted a more middle class/public school boy accent. I ve...

Re: Drugs in sport

Most games at CH (rugby union as an example) are run under the regulations of the relevent organisation and most if not all have strict rules regarding drugs. I was one of many, perhaps thousands of, pupils with asthma and with asthma even walking to the loo can be difficult during an attack which ...

Re: Expelled

Yes I've come to the same conclusion JR. Listening to my kids and their friends way back when (and even allowing for a bit of bragging) I got the impression that 14 seemed to be a typical age for some kind of serious sexual involvement. Fascinating how different societies see these things. In our d...

Richard, You wrote: "It may help if the school actually say how many people are affected by this. Re: Thornton House Photos

Here's Thornton A, 1997. Mr O'Boyle, housemaster, is third row fifth from left. House captain Nick Wolstenholme in the center and Mr Phelps / Philps (?) the other side. I can't remember how to spell his last name but do remember he taught maths and could juggle. I forget the name of the CDT teacher...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Karim's victims werent minors as such (?). As i remember the victim that got him moved on (i can actually remember her name) was in tbe 17/18 bracket. Im not pointing this out to be argumentative, just for the sake of accuracy... 14 year olds ARE minors! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex...

Re: "More than a Brother" A H Buck and Edmund Blunden

Having said that though, considering the girls had only been there a short time, can you imagine if one of them had fallen pregnant...? The rules werent perfect, but the potential alternatives would have been worse. Surely...? I don't know what the ideal solution is, but in general I believe one sh...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Nothing to do with being "posh". All of Karim's victims were female and Eton is boys only. But the Queen's club isn't - I think Rockfreak is making a good point about the level of vulnerability of the student body at CH compared with other schools or institutions. It makes you wonder about Dobbie a...

Re: Who Knew What?

But yes, in the vein of Scrub’s post, I had once had enough and knocked on my housemaster’s door with a bl**dy nose after another boy had walked into the room, jumped on top of me on the sofa and started punching me repeatedly in the head. I was given a disciplinary detention for pushing him off me...

Re: "More than a Brother" A H Buck and Edmund Blunden

This is part of why I'm so pissed off with Poulton in particular. Several friends were instantly expelled from CH by Poulton for being caught having sex, and treated to patronising sermons about it. The entire school even had to endure one cringe inducing lecture in Big School where he talked about...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer

I can’t think who else taught Maths- Sprosen, O’Boyle and a very young teacher who can’t have been more than about 23? To say he had crowd control problems would be putting it mildly. Carey...? Others included Tamvakis, O Meara and i think McLean...? Carey! That was it. I remember during one of his...

Re: Ernest McCall- Maths teacher / housemaster Maine A

I don't recall Housemasters ever moving house before (not sure if he had a gap). I wonder if there was a specific reason for that? Staff moved around a fair bit during my time, as I remember it anyway, not any specific reason as far as I can recall. The Endacott's, Holdsworth's, Flemming's, for exa...

Re: Who Knew What?

I have somewhat hazy memories of the Husband incident. I recall that I was chatting to a few folks whilst running/walking school drills one weekend morning down by the old gym near the train station. The story was that he had "eloped" with Grecian or deputy Grecian. I remember that here was rumour ...
