Going back to the subject of the thread, anyone at CH around 1920 to 1930? I've got a problem here - a father and son, both with the same name and both in the same business and both famous but I think it was the dad.. Father born 1912 but the although the photo looks far too recent he refers to gett...

I don't think CH has ever claimed to be at the top academically (happy to proved wrong though) but I would say that opportunities CH offers (certainly in my time and since) have been well-above any comprehensive/day school I've come across? J Claiming and acheiving are two separate things. CH might...

I always put the broadie buckle on the back... Seems about right. Did you halfinch a narrow girdle and plait it for your breeches? That was the thing in my day. You could get away with it if the plaiting was tight and neat, but otherwise woe betide you. In Col A it was customary to pass your broadi...

Re: RUGBY

Odd you mention Goodwood - my uncle ran the motor racing circuit in the 60's and I met Brabham and Surtees among other boyhood heroes. Since this is the only communication method open to me, FWIW there is a PM to you answering that (politely, surprisingly) together with one to Spoonbill dated 14th ...

Sorry to DP As for draining resources - it became no longer viable to have a commercial reprographics company for CHE with the advent of desk top publishing. But QE - someone must have got really upset for that to close - although admitedly - the facilities weren't actually that good on the whole. ...

I never would, the lad just shoved his phone in my face and said 'have a look at this', by the time I could look away it was too late. Well if you ever see him again tell him to be careful - someone got sent to jail for 2 months for showing a beheading video that he had on his phone! See: http://ne...

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c224/englishangelmcf/Housey.jpg I don't have a year for this, but the caption underneath says, "We all looked upon Grecians as some kind of god" The hat has gone, and so has the philospophy but the coat is the same. Surprise, surprise, I have just taken an original...

Amongst the numerous customs associated with Christ's Hospital, may be noticed the "Supping in Public." I bet this one doesn't exist any more. No but I had seen that quote before. The closest is the annual St Matthews Day parade when a representative sample (only a couple of hundred) of pupils woul...

softie: there was a time when to have a chance of going to Uni you had to get three "S" levels because otherwise your parents couldn't afford to have you not bringing money into the house.

button grecian - either for being very academic, or being a monitor (school or house) they have a fancy coat with more buttons and velvet cuffs ... well worth the hard work or extra responsibility  In my day it was a mark for extraordinary conduct; you had to be a grecian, you would be a hous...

I have a scar on my head (mentioned in 'would your schoolfriends recognise you') from being hit with a stoolball bat. So you know how it could feel if the ball goes 6 inches east of target. In fact I used generally to hit the target (wooden, not skulls) but after smashing a couple they decided that...
