Re: Old Blues Weekend (Wearing Full Housey)

Having just spotted the "What happens to ‘retired’ Housey coats?" thread on page 1 of the General Chat - CH Stuff forum, I thought I'd revive this thread. I continue to believe that holding periodic Old Blues' Weekends involving the wearing of full Housey is a thumping good idea and would prove a he...

Could Someone Put Cain! on YouTube?

My memories of the mid-1970s CH/Craig Pruess/Visitor 2035 production Cain! are getting pretty hazy now, so it's definitely time someone dug out their old vinyl copy of the privately-issued album, turned it into a file and posted it on YouTube. I've recently been listening to Visitor 2035's one and o...

Re: Jack Hards and Wells, Prep B bootroom

1970s icon Pegleg ("Next smelly boy!") abused our hair and the skin of our necks throughout my time at CH Horsham. He did have a shop of his own, but it was in Shoreham-by-Sea, not Horsham, presumably so that Houseyboys couldn't easily exact revenge by throwing bricks through his shop window or pour...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Are the words stick and slurp still used at CH, denoting a swot and/or a pupil who tries to suck up to members of staff?

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Thanks for that, Oliver and PR. Call me reactionary, but I dread to think what the (presumably) latter-day Housey slang is, even though it's certain to be no less valid than older terminology...as long as it doesn't consist of words which are also used beyond the ring fence by ordinary mortals witho...

Reverting to the original topic:

Do pupils still say "Quis?" "Ego!" or was all that stuff left behind in the days of Jennings & Darbishire, Billy Bunter and yours truly?

Re: World War 2, CH Teachers, etc

Am I not right in thinking that Basil 'Greg-Nut' Gregory arrived at the school during the war, with no university degree at all, yet remained as a teacher until the mid-1970s, teaching up to LF level only? Do we know how he came to be employed by CH and why he wasn't serving in the military? Had he ...

Re: Leigh Hunt House Photos...

The one abiding memory I have of Miss Haigh in Prep A days, was the occasion (1962) when a family friend sent me a fruit cake for my birthday. I was summoned to Matrons room, allowed to open said parcel and eat one small slice. The parcel was then rewrapped and returned to sender!! Cruelty or What?...

When renowned bokkers pass away, does it get into the Blue?

I reckon an obituary would probably tell us more about them than we ever knew when we were at school.

I think it's a gay thing, isn't it?

But back in the 16th Century nobody had thought of Mardi Gras-style gay carnival costumes yet, so the boys had to dress up as penguins instead.

Am I right?

Re: Out Of Bounds signs.

Come to that, what's the status of Shelley's Wood anyway? Is public access allowed or not? If not, do OBs count as the public? Not that I fancy traversing Slippery Slips in March after heavy rain, you understand. I think I dimly remember a public footpath sign at the Itchingfield end of the wood, bu...

Re: Does CH Take In a Fixed Quota of Ginger Kids Each Year?

I daren’t grow a beard myself in case it comes out ginger). This actually happened to me, much to my surprise. But to be honest it didn't look too bad, probably because being a brown-haired person I don't have the pale-and-sickly sun-disintegratable complexion which generally accompanies ginger h...

Re: Does CH Take In a Fixed Quota of Ginger Kids Each Year?

Not sure where the whole anti-ginger thing began. Did it start with the 'nobody wants a ginger baby' sketch Harry Enfield did? Whatever, it's just not on, especially when the ginger brigade were presumably here long before the Saxons arrived. Personally, I too can only remember one ginger member of ...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff

Dick Dawe did indeed have his finger broken during a rugby match. By the time he got to hospital, nothing could be done about the nerve damage, so the paralysis that had already set in remained with him for the rest of his life. In the eyes of the boys, it imbued him with a certain cool-value along ...
