Re: RIP Michael Scuffil

Thank you for letting us now. I met him in Cologne when we went there for Christmas markets. He appeared dressed almost like the caricature of Sherlock Holmes, in the cape with the double layer at the top (can’t remember its name!) and a deerstalker. We spent the afternoon together, as he showed us ...

Mary Stopes-Roe has just been mentioned on the Radio 4 Obituary programme Last Word. It featured a clip of her speaking about her father getting the idea for the bouncing bomb from watching the children play.

The BBC is carrying a report https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-48151635 but doesn’t mention he was a Chaplain, neither in this year’s report nor in the linked last year’s one. I would have expected that to be included as in many minds it makes the crimes seem even worse.

Re: Anyone else who hated being at CH ?

A correction to that, school leaving age was raised to FIFTEEN, in 1948, I think. I was already teaching the next time ROSLA came round, I can’t remember which year in the early 70s that it became 16.

Re: Anyone else who hated being at CH ?

The Leavers Charge was written, I think, by Hamilton Fyfe (Correct me if I'm wrong here) in an age before the economist John Maynard Keynes gave us the blueprint for government taking a steadying hand in the wilder excesses of the free market and starting to equalise up the economies of the western...

Re: looking for an ancient radio programme

Michael, if you’ve got time to waste, search here https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/r ... 1978-01-29 as far as I can see you’ve got all programmes listed day by day. A radio freak friend sent me the link very quickly when I asked for you.

I agree with you, Michael on everything you said. He is a bit theatrical but .... that's his style. He is there to uphold Parliament and that is what he does.

Just read your letter in Private Eye, Freaky, it was one of those weeks from h*ll last week, so never got round to reading much of Private Eye, just enjoyed the cartoons, as ever! Can’t think how CH set me up in any way. I remember a job interview in the 80s, by then I’d taught in Ghana, Pakistan an...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lobster

I cannot imagine any such conversation with an adult in CH Hertford in my day! Come on Katharine, I bet DR was a total uninhibited raver. No way! The closest she ever came to mentioning the sex act was the infamous Tampax* talk. We were told, in no uncertain terms, that no gentleman would ever want...

Re: One for Freaky and Co...

There are in the UK probably at least 10 million people who either have dual citizenship or are entitled (as this girl may be) to apply for another citizenship*. Including, I suspect, Mr Javid. This is a slippery slope, and all these people are at risk of being stripped of their citizenship if a go...
