LANGUAGE
I should add, as a further contribution, that once, when in Germany my wife and I visited a large garden. The owner, a German, did not speak English and my wife, a very enthusiastic gardener, did not (at that time) speak German, so they then had a very lively discussion in Latin which both had learn...

LANGUAGE
In many ways I wish the English language was not called English. Gosh, there's a thought! If it was deemed necessary to remove any national/ethnic factors from the names of languages, the following would also have to be renamed: German, French, Latvian, Estonian, Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Malay...

STEPHENSON
Wasn't there an Old Blue who became President of the MCC now I think about it? Stephenson? The man you have in mind is the late Lieutenant-Colonel JR (John) Stephenson, Old Blue, originally of the Royal Sussex Regiment and later of The Queen's Regiment. He left the Army early to become the Secretar...

MORE ON PINS, etc
I believe that the CHA office are already trying to look at any records which remain from the merchandising activities of Christ's Hospital Enterprises. Can this be that difficult? The last CHE stocvk was sold off at OB Day 2005, so some of those involved must still be around. Also, I preumse that ...

MEMORABILIA - GENERAL
I am amazed that it has taken the CHA so long to get round to the subject of badges, etc, apart, of course, from the CHA badge itself which was produced very rapidly by Louise. However, before we take off on any flights of fancy - pottery figures, tankards, beer mats, etc - I suggest that we should ...

CH ARMS AND THE SWORD
Just for the record, I have done a bit of delving and the correct description of the Christ's Hospital coat-of-arms is: "...argent, a cross gules in the dexter chief, a dagger of the first on a chief azure between two fleurs-de-lis, or, a rose argent." Well, that has settled that!

ALMOST THE SAME NAME BUT NOT QUITE
There are, indeed, a number of hospitals in the USA with similar sounding names to ours, but they are actually called "CHRIST HOSPITAL" i.e., without the apostrophe S.DavebytheSea wrote:There is a Christ's Hospital hospital in the USA

I'm afraid all this smacks of what I came across many times in my days with Local Government. It had to be seen to be fair to advertise ALL vacant posts, internally and externally, (if you'll pardon the expression !) It was all very academic really, because everyone 'in the know', knew who'd got th...

Thank you for bringing this matter to the attention of the Forum, and for inviting comment, but if you seriously want an answer, rather than speculation, would it not be appropriate to ask those who posted the ad, and those responsible for the CH Website? A very reasonable question. In fact, I have...

Maybe foureyes is Southern in Disguise In order to scotch any possible rumours, although I live in southern England, I am definitely not to be confused with Peter Southern. As regards my complaint, it is this. I have now discovered that the vacancy notice was posted in the Sunday Times and The Time...

Mrs C I agree that it has been known for some time that the present Clerk is leaving. However, as I am sure you well know, the business of job advertisements and applications is a very formal one, and an applicant would be well-advised not to submit his/her application until they have seen the adver...

CLERK OF CHRIST'S HOSPITAL
Old Blues may wish to note that the job advertisement for a new Clerk for the Foundation (ie, the Counting House) was posted on the CH Website on Tuesday 23 January for response by Monday 29 January . To give old Blues just four working day's notice for what to us is a very important post seems a di...

BADGES
SWORD
Although I cannot see it myself, I accept that there may be a silver sword on those badges. Nevertheless, this does not invalidate my original point, which is that the sword should be RED. Every other CH or City of London badge has a RED sword. I rest my case.

BADGES
Mrs C
Looking at the pics of the tie-slide and stick-pin it strikes me that the badge is incorrect, since the upright RED sword is missing from the top left quarter!! Perhaps, that is why they did not sell??
