Re: Arrival by train

Actually I did wonder when I was typing the above whether it had been the brewery (McMullens) but that was the other side of town and long gone by the time I was travelling to Hertford as an Old Girl - or a parent. There is a limit to how long even the smell of stale beer will linger!

Re: Old Blue Re-unions

Oh dear - I have just flicked back through some posts that I missed. We had our honeymoon at the Butlins hotel in Cliftonville! Strangely enough we are still technically married 41 years later, but that is more by luck than judgement!

Re: The Dolphin

Sorry Vonnie - yes I did misread your posting. Also my memory is probably influenced by tales from my daughters' days at Hertford.

Re: Arrival by train

The majority of us travelled on the school train from Liverpool Street, accompanied by a handful of staff (those who had drawn the short straw) with clipboards. The Hertford East line was never very picturesque in those days, but I believe that now it would be much prettier - with places like Picket...

Re: The Dolphin

How on earth did you manage that, Vonny? In my day (!!!) local tradesmen were in the habit of reporting back to the school if they saw anybody obviously belonging to the school doing anything remotely 'iffy'. So no visits to the pub, or even an apparently out-of-the-way off-licence, or nipping over ...

Re: A Girl's School from Outside

I have heard (no names, no pack drill!) that it was possible to climb over the back gate, so I guess it didn't actually have barbed wire along the top! But yes, it was always kept closed and firmly locked.

Re: Happy birthday Kerren

A friendship blessing for your birthday Kerren (from John O'Donohue's book Anam Cara - in case you don't know, it means 'soul friend') May you be blessed with good friends. May you learn to be a good friend to your self. May you be able to journey to that place in your soul where there is great love...

Looks to me like the side of the swimming pool building, with the pathway alongside it leading to the infirmary?

Re: What Sounds & Smells Instantly Transport You Back to CH?

Lucky for you Vonny. We had to spend what felt like several hours a day cleaning virtually the whole house, when you had finished it had to be passed and then done again if it was not good enough. It was definitely Bluebell that we used, obviously later replaced by Brasso - perhaps Brasso was less p...

Re: What Sounds & Smells Instantly Transport You Back to CH?

Interesting, Angela - my own reaction on reading Maria's post was also 'You mean Bluebell' . Mind you, I am surprised that my daughter has even heard of Brasso. Would it be off topic to ask if anybody else feels that their attitude to housework has been permanently influenced (indeed scarred?) by du...
