Re: GRACE

My memory of first grace chimes with yours Katharine. Maybe there was a Hertford/Horsham anomaly?

Yellow dresses

Does anyone else remember these with total horror? The unflattering style; the sweat protectors; the AWFUL colour (that flattered no-one); the greenflies attracted to the colour in their thousands ............... Well, I have been sewing scrubs for Harrogate hospital recently. All very fine until th...

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

Looking at safeguarding procedures, state schools are operated by the same public authorities as the local social services departments. They have joined up procedures which provide for inter departmental procedures and consultation. Quite right RichardB. I have had to implement the removal of staff...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I understand that I am flogging a dead horse here but ..... it was a
male OB (proudly wearing a tie to remind him which school he had attended) who had no idea of the existence of Hertford.
Hertford was treated like a poor relation in many ways.

Please stop patronising us!
Miss Morrison transferred to give the girls a point of reference and familiarity - and to fight their corner if necessary. I don't view her with nostalgia, but I do admire her feisty spirit.

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I have a very clear memory of an OB day. I was standing looking at the attendees board and someone behind me said "I didn't even know that there was a girls school". The very first child admitted to CH was a girl. An awful lot of male OBs of a certain age have chosen to either forget or ig...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford

I t’s noteworthy that you saw IAPOTP as A Good Thing. I’d never really reflected on it that way until now, but I remember it well. As a young inmate, and after a brief spell of Baker (and being oblivious to his failings) Hansford felt like an icy blast from the 1950s; the punishments were indeed no...

I think vegetarianism is really common and well catered for at CH now.

Re: Help the newbie!

I first kitted out a 2nd former 9 years ago and then renewed her kit subsequently. Sports kit was fairly rigid in the early days but relaxed as the years went by. She was sporty and in a variety of teams and so used team kit (I never really got my head round that, but I never ended up paying for it)...

Re: Phone boxes

Not a phone in sight in our day was there Katharine. No letter boxes either. All letters had to be left unsealed so the wardmistress could read them. I came close to expulsion for posting a letter on the way up to Ashbourne.

Re: Should there be a separate sub-forum for the “historic abuse” threads?

Katharine and I were contemporaries at Hertford. Like her I was not aware of anything sexual going on. "Squizzing" was a bit bizarre. There was a fair bit of downright unkindness by house staff. Teaching staff hadn't a clue what was going on outside the classroom as far as I could tell. Fo...

Re: Damian Le Bas, Radio 4 Book of the Week

I wonder if CH collected the "traveller premium". Every state school receives substantial additional funding for every child from a "travelling family" in the school. It's worth having - or was when I was in education.

If you remember, Katharine, I spent most of my school days in trouble because I constantly rebelled against the petty restrictions!

Yes, my programme was definitely an official school one. So this was almost certainly a "public" performance rather than part of the competition.

Re: Shrove Tuesday Plays

OK. This is remarkable. I have found the programme for House Plays in November 1965. The programme states that the House Acting competition was held in October and the best five went forward for another performance, but I’m not sure for whom we performed. 6’s Quality Street Act 2 Phoebe Throssel ; R...
