Re: My first enovel.I went to Hertford.

Would that be Frank? I remember meeting you on an Old Blues' Day at Horsham and finding ourselves stuck behind a crowd at the bar in the Grecians'Club - you yelled over the heads of the crowd to your son who was serving behind the bar, and two drinks appeared as if by magic! I also remember you from...

Re: Barnes Wallis

I also remember that he showed us a scale model of a swing wing plane he called the Swallow - possibly a prototype of Concorde.

Re: My first enovel.I went to Hertford.

I guess it is not going to be accessible to those of us who don't use e-readers? Good to see someone else on here of our vintage!

Re: Roy Edwin Terry

I still have a recording of 'The Thing' mentioned by postwarblue - can't call it vinyl; it is on a 78, inherited from my grandmother, along with a whole teachest full of other 78s.

Re: Letter writing

In fact life at Hertford had mellowed a lot by the time of the merger - my daughters had an easier time in the 80s than I had had in the 50/60s.

Re: CH as an educational facility for West Sussex C.C.

We had no choice. The entire girls' school travelled by train at the beginning and end of term, accompanied by whichever staff had drawn the short straw. It was expected that we would be met at Liverpool Street by parents - those who could not were advised to employ the services of the Corps of Comm...

Re: CH as an educational facility for West Sussex C.C.

I was also raised on a council estate. In those days children who did particularly well in the 11+ exam were notified by the LCC that they might be eligible to apply for admission to CH - perhaps many parents were unaware until then that such a school existed. I was fortunate that my father worked a...

Re: CH as an educational facility for West Sussex C.C.

It is certainly a huge improvement that these days parents are welcomed to visit on a fairly casual basis; in my own youth they seemed to be regarded as more of an intrusion and only allowed to attend specific events by invitation. It didn't seem to occur to the 'school' that parents should be more-...

Re: Letter writing

In my time (also 1950s) at Hertford we sat and wrote letters at a set time under supervision. They were handed in unsealed - I think stamps were affixed by housemistress (not sure about that). In addition to our parents we were also allowed to write to an approved list of others; I think we had to p...

Re: RIP Sir Colin Davis

Nothing to do with Sir Colin; how strange that my own memory of fish knives at Hertford also focuses on the cleaning of them! Also the 'salmon pink' sauce that occurred frequently with fish - a similar shade to Suffolk pink houses (where it is apparently caused by pigs blood in the render!). Anyway ...

Re: CH as an educational facility for West Sussex C.C.

eowyn3099 says ' places are offered on academic potential and that little extra something ..........' Yes, this is true, but it is not what CH was founded for! Historically the principal criteria for children to be selected were firstly NEED and secondly the ability to benefit from the kind of educa...

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

I have a college-style CHOGA scarf onto which I sewed a blazer badge (presumably purloined from my blazer when I left in 1962!) The fleurs de lys are gold, and the rose is white/silver (difficult to tell - it has become a bit grubby over the years, but I believe that white would have been used to si...
