Re: Jicker, Housey slang and individual Houses

At Hertford stodge was nothing to do with shoe polish. Friday lunch was always fish and stodge, the latter being various forms of sponge or steamed pudding. Another word which springs now to the aging mind is codge, which was the name for the senior study in each house/ward - or perhaps it was only ...

Re: Jicker, Housey slang and individual Houses

'Dressing' is not only an army term - it is also used in the navy (don't know about the fly boys!). When I was on new entry training with the WRNR we were the only squad to fail the parade training course and have to retake it!! My husband was not amused - he having trained at Whale Island thought h...

Re: Constant Lambert

Very off topic, but ................... In Hertford in the 1950s girls were not allowed outside the school gates without wearing a hat - this was clearly a hangover from previous times when it was not 'done' for young ladies to appear in public hatless - I blame it on Miss West's obsession with St P...

Re: Residential assessment?

Moominmama says that they now have a reason why their child was not offered a place, and that it is something fixable. That seems to indicate that progress has been made in the field of school/parent communications - rejoice and be glad!!

Re: Residential assessment?

Aha! Usually our 'insider' fount of all useful information is Howard H but he too has recently been remarkably absent - perhaps he has also defected to Facebook? Please come back Howard - all is forgiven!

I don't think there is anyone left to shout - they have all defected to Facebook. I wonder if there is any point in keeping this forum going?

Re: Bullying & Abuse - Take II

Aw, c'mon! Whilst I confess to a liking for some church music, in this particular case what attracted me was the primeval (savage?) beat, definitely illustrative of the savagery happening in the film. I was unaware at the time that it was either 'church' music or African. Or perhaps that just proves...

Re: Bullying & Abuse - Take II

I still cringe whenever I think of the film 'If' - I was convinced that 'outsiders' might think that CH was like that! It didn't help that my uncle was the production accountant on the film and had a small part as an extra (he appeared as a gowned master coming out of chapel). But I loved the backgr...

Re: Wearing of C H uniform

I remember that Housey uniform rated a pretty high score in one of the I-Spy books, but cannot remember whether it was I-Spy Sights of London or I-Spy Uniforms. Very handy little books they were too. Most of what I still remember about trees came from the relevant I-Spy book; I probably still have s...

Re: Bursary information

............. and some of us are even old enough to remember the days when there was no mention of bursaries, because we all qualified. We, or our parents, paid a parental contribution assessed according to income.

Re: End of term

I have nothing constructive to add re end of term activities, but mention of Men of Harlech struck a chord. The CH Guide companies used to sing a song to that tune called 'Ancient Britons'. It went something like this - I am sure Katharine could correct me if I am wrong? What's the use of shirts of ...

Re: I AM STILL AROUND.

JR - we have managed to live almost without curtains for several years. With the lump sum which my husband received on his retirement we had the whole house double glazed, doors and windows, and siezed the opportunity to have the window panes as large as possible to let in the maximum amount of ligh...
