Re: Hammer blows to CH finances

I would suspect that is fees become VATable then the fact the school is now split as school and then the foundation "buyng"places for foundationers would mean that non foundationers paid VAT but the charity "the foundation" was able to reclaim VAT on the fees it paid the school f...

Re: Vegetarians

My Mate Time "Veggie" was strictly vegetarian throughout our time at CH in the 80's and there was for the first 5 years no provision other than the fact Dr Hoskyns prescribed him Cheddar & Apples to be administered by Matron he just didnt eat the meat part of meals. Remember this is al...

Re: Explanation of the 'Tube'

I still have quite vivid memories of the tube network having spent many happy hours walking and smoking in it. One of my usual activities was removing a light bulb, placing a coin in the socket, replacing the bulb and switching the light back on. The resulting darkness allowing me further protectio...

Re: Attitudes to sports

80's we had Rugby in Michaelmas, Hockey or Football in Lent and Cricket/athletics in Summer. I think Football had been introduced by Hailey, he definitely seemed to be the force behind it. By then we had coaching in Rugby even in junior houses although it was obviously not up to club standards. Ther...

Re: All this is incredibly sad

Up until the block system came into being I would say that as the population of the senior houses were at least partly self selected you would end up with people with similar interests banding together and creating a "house culture" which would take a major event (like the block system) to...

Very true - if this it to become a "remove CHOBA membership for all old blues with a criminal conviction" thread, naming them all, it will become very long thread

Re: Old Blue Scientists???

Since the 80s at least, the general attitude had been to look down on science, as far as I can tell. Certainly, a talented rugby player would receive more attention than a potential scientist. And anyway, what's the point, when someone with a chemistry degree will probably waste all that knowledge ...

Re: Help the newbie!

in the 80's you were specifically requested not to have contact with parents for first 3 weeks (other than letters) to apparently stop homesickness !! By the way the bit about school "team kit" will be that if they are in a school team the shirts at least will be specific to the team and t...

Re: When You Left CH, Did You Cease to Have Access to the Musical Instrument You'd Learned How to Play?

i joined the school at the same time my great grandfather died leaving an instrument to the school - he had been a lab tech and very good cornet player and played with some form of big band/dance band at the school in the 50's (Laurie was his name). I was immediately given the instrument and thus it...

Re: Congratulations to this year's Grecians and their new Headmaster

the trouble with Oxbridge now is you can only apply to one of them in a year, so once he put down Cambridge he could not apply to Oxford even though Cambridge would not even interview him. One of my younger brothers contemporaries at CH had the same happen to them, a flat rejection from Cambridge, s...

Re: Congratulations to this year's Grecians and their new Headmaster
