Re: When You Left CH, Did You Cease to Have Access to the Musical Instrument You'd Learned How to Play?
I learned the piano and trumpet at C.H. When I enjoyed Nat Service I was sent to the Tower of London because the Corps band were short of a trumpet. As a Sgt in the Ed Corps at 18 I enjoyed a life style which few teenagers could match. For the last six months I earned the same wages as a Sgt with a f...

Thornton B Sword
When I left Thornton B in 1955 the house owned a very fine Japanese ceremonial sword taken during the war by an old Blue from Thornton B. It was in a ceremonial case and in today's terms probably worth some money. Did it stay in the house or was it lost? JHGS

Re: W.P.C. Davies
Sorry to hear that William Philip Cathcart has died. For me he was the best thing that came out of CH. He used to take a pair of us fishing at Frensham in an old Willys Jeep. He became very friendly with a white hunter named Atherton who had purchased Frensham little Pond. Sadly I never sat to him b...

Re: Scholarships to CH -- and beyond
I went to CH on a West Gifts Scholarship from Reading. The same year as Sinclair Wynshank. 1948. There was no charge to my parents. I understand that the West family were local Berkshire worthies who also endowed similar opportunities from Newbury. JHGS

Over 60 years ago c.1950 I was returning home at the end of term from Liverpool Street when an elderly lady began to ask about CH. She told me that her father had been a pupil in London and that one of the favourite occupations of some pupils was to get a good vantage point within the school premise...
